Surprised this thread hasn't been revived. The GOG summer sale finale is going on right now. Just picked up The Walking Dead series for about 13 bucks.
Anyway, has anyone made the jump and tried GOG Galaxy? Thoughts?

I have. It's a great way to manage and download your GOG catalog, but it doesn't offer much else at the moment.

I agree, but I didn't appreciate the way they "forced" me to use Galaxy. Simply put, they removed the old downloader and having to download manually tens of 100MB chunks in order to get Witcher 3 was crazy.
Good thing Galaxy is unobtrusive and allows you to ignore it completely once you downloaded the game. Plus it allows you to update you game just like Steam does, something that was sorely lacking until now.

How good is it at archiving the installers? I like to be able to download the game on one computer and then just port it over to the computer on the TV if needed.

It downloads the game the same way the old downloader did but it allows you to manage the game better through its interface, like updates, additional downloadable content etc. It also keeps all the installers in a single folder so you can manually copy them to anywhere else.

Galaxy is currently a smouldering pile of shit. You can't even pause downloads (the current work-around is to close the client!). If you wanna compete with Steam you're gonna have to try harder.

still sounds better than Steam on launch, at least the downloads work :joke:

Yeah but Steam was a trailblazer - GoG have a bunch of history to learn from.

Yea I know, hence why I was being facetious :p
I haven't used Galaxy yet, but one reason I've been preferring to buy the same games on GoG than Steam is exactly cause I dont need to boot up a client to run it. Since I still use a severyl outdated laptop when I'm out and about, and don't always have internet, it's nice to skip on the overhead, even if Steam is pretty quick and easy these days. And I know Galaxy is entirely optional too.

That's still a major ding against them. What made GOG so successful was that they actually deliver on the"Zero hassle downloads" promise that other companies only talk about.
Want to install a Steam, Origin, Gamefly, or so on game in an area where you don't have internet service on your personal computer? Login information for previous games lost in said area? Forget it. With GOG it's no problem whatsoever.
