I like how my country got these cute evolutionary odd ball native animals, but Australia ended up with a bunch of weird shit that will poison you to death or tear your face off.

We've got animals there that can do that as well.

Anytime anyone asks why I believe we can colonize Mars, I just point to Australia, and say that we did a pretty good job there, so how hard could another planet be?

So, send our prisoners there to die, and call the few who don't a new ally?
Australia: Figuratively everything is poisonous.
Mars: Literally everything is poisonous.

More like:
Mars is indifferent to your suffering. It's a blasted, cold hellscape with an unbreathable atmosphere that cares not whether you live or die.
Australia is full of plants and animals seen nowhere else in the world, and 95% of them are actively trying to hurt and/or kill you. Millions died making the country habitable, and now everyone lives huddled along the coasts, as if they're all ready to bail on the whole affair the moment the emus decide to come back.

Australia was already inhabited for tens of thousands of years before the white colonists came. Not the case with Mars, as far as we know.

A. As far as we know.
B. The indigenous Australians were so freaked out by the natural hostile weirdness surrounding them, that a major component of their religion has been convincing themselves it's all just a dream. That won't happen on Mars. It's a pretty boring place comparatively.
