Star Trek Armada 1 & 2
Heretic 2
Hexen 2: expansion pack

I was intrigued by the Gothic games since I read reviews for both some time ago. But I'm still kinda wary of their primitive-looking textures as seen in some screenshots. Gameplaywise are they like Arx Fatalis? I like deep dungeon-crawlers like Arx Fatalis, Blade of Darkness and Demon's Souls, more than Oblivion-style open-world RPGs. Are Gothic 1, 2 dungeon crawlers that I might like or do they mostly take place outside? Any recommendations for other little-know rpgs I might like?

The Gothics do have mines, caves and dungeons in them, but the majority will be spent outside.
In that way they are like Oblivion, however personally I much prefer the Gothic series over Oblivion, the landscape is much more folded/overlapping/3-dimensional than the height map of Oblivion allows for. If you like exploring Gothic is definitely for you.
Be warned though that a lot of people seem to dislike the controls. They are indeed unusual but by no means unusable. They just take some getting used to.

I am currently considering buying a used copy of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Amazon has them for $13, but perhaps they will show up on (
www.gog.com).

Fuck Yeah! I own them, but they are a slight pain to get going. I'd buy them again from GOG simply for the ease of use and whatnot

Dude, check out a MASSIVELY underrated RPG called Dungeon Lords. I really liked it now that it is patched up. Very much what you are looking for.

The controls are old school as hell, and VERY functional. They work so well, I was almost bored in Gothic 3 when they were changed to the Two Worlds style 'click to swing' formula.

Is it me, or does $13 sound rather expensive for that title? I bought a replacement copy for a damaged disc just 2 years ago for $2 complete. I suggest shopping around a bit more.

Dungeon Lords looks really interesting actually. So is it all patched up now and playable? When I first checked it out few years back it was still buggy as hell so I dropped it in favour of Arx Fatalis (fearing that the bugs would eat my computer a la Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor :p).
I might give Gothic series a try too (but Dungeon Lords is probably more up my alley). I got used to Arx Fatalis's controls so I don't see how Gothic's could be worse than that.

DO IT!
Gothics controls really aren't all that bad. They just have a transitional period where you're coming to terms with the weirdness of the setup. Once you get used to it though, you're flying.

The trick to Gothic 2 (never played 1) is to abandon the mouse completely. Keyboard only.
It sounds crazy, but the game improved immensely when I ditched mouselook.
Renzatic on 29/1/2010 at 20:59
No. I wouldn't go that far. Just remember that mouse 1 is like a primer for all physical actions done in the game (climbing ladders, opening chests, swinging your sword, magic), and you're set.
It might be because I've been playing them since they came out, but I'm so used to it now I can do everything ingame without even thinking about it.
