What are Total Annihilation's strong points? In the comments someone mentions Supreme Commander but the demo for that title left me underwhelmed.

I'm no expert as it's a few years since I played it, but well-balanced armies are a necessary thing. I know a lot of games say that, but you really need them in TA. Nowadays it's probably been surpassed by others, but for its time it allowed a huge number of enemies on the screen at once, 3d terrain meant that you the terrain could block fire, and also the ability to fight on land, air and sea. If you've tried Supreme Commander and it wasn't your thing, then I'd maybe give it a miss since that's the spiritual successor. Of course, there are many who complain that Supreme Commander was a shadow of the original but had fancier graphics.

I won't lie, I bought Earth 2150 in a sale a few weeks ago, and I bought the game I really wanted, TA, just today. In 1998, a friend of mine really sold me on it, but I never bought it.
And I kinda want to remove Earth 2150 from my gameshelf.

Drain eco, physics, music, annihilation.

Does the GoG release include the soundtrack, though? It was a CD audio soundtrack, so you might want to check if it's included.

You get the music as an additional download, but they're small mp3 files, not CD-quality. Don't know if they're the original CD music downgraded, but they're only 1-2min each.
I agree with Koki, the music is good quality stuff, especially for when it was released.

Looks like the intro music is from Fileplanet (or one of those gaming sites as it's the 128kb version that I already have) and the others look like they might be too.

I just want to confirm the original CD tracks are indeed that short.

Hooray! I've been waiting for that.
