I've just picked up Torment for the first time, and am greatly enjoying it so far (quite a lot more than BG1, the only other infinity engine game i've played, which was worthy but dull). I think dethy's attention span just can't keep up with the masses of text.
Which is ironic considering he is a journalist.
...
Actually, scratch that, it's perfectly fitting.
no hate, <3 dethy

Gotta agree with dethtoll, Planescape: Torment is not a 'good' game, and I only really read Russian literature, so my attention span is loooooong :smug:
Yeah and BG is utter cack too.

Nah, we know you can read.

It's cute you think I'm at all butthurt. Butthurt is when everyone shits themselves every god damn time I trash Planescape Torment, even when it's just a cheap shot because I think it's funny.
psst PS:T sucks

Wow, we um...actually agree on one thing. I did not enjoy Torment, nor do I think it was a particularly deep game.
Every time someone claims that they did not like Torment, the major accusation is "You don't like reading !!" or "You're not smart enough to appreciate the DEEPness !!!"
Neither of those really apply to me. One of my favorite games that I am currently playing right now is a pure text game Anchorhead, and I just came out from a span where I read three major novels in a row by Dostoevsky (Brothers Karamazov, The Idiot, and Crime and Punishment...all for my own personal self study.)
I wouldn't say the game sucks, it's just that it seems to be in the unusual position where it is an obscure game, so those who play it and enjoy it feel the need to justify why they like it. And if anyone else has a different opinion, they become ultra-defensive and will resort to "they're just too stupid to get it!"
In a way, I understand them because I use to be a bit like that when I first became a jazz fan. Jazz isn't too popular so in order to defend justify it to myself, I use to look down on other people who didn't like it.
It has taken
maturity and a better sense of
perspective to see that just because someone has a different reaction to something doesn't mean that there is some flaw in them or that there is something lacking in them which prevents them from feeling the same way.
Given that, I still feel that Planescape Torment has some painfully bad bits of writing sprinkled throughout (not entirely bad, let's stay away from silly superlatives) and there are some objective flaws (such as the combat mechanics, the linear nature of the game, the fetch-it or fedex quests that you have to do in Sigil) that those who love the game seem unusually willing to overlook, and brush aside as if they don't exist.

hush now. It's okay. We all like to have a popular or critically acclaimed game to hate. It makes us feel more independent-minded. I have the same relationship with Quake.

Hm...that doesn't really apply in my case either because I wanted to like Planescape. Every review I read talked about how deep, and philosophical, and amazing the game was. That's the mindset I went in with, and on paper, it looked like the perfect game for someone with my proclivities. In a way I really wish there are more balanced reviews of that game around, but I don't think I've found any that were well-written. Right now, the only reviews are from the ones who loved it entirely and are defensive about it or those who hated it. Not a good recipe for getting an accurate picture of a game.

FWIW, with Windows 7, 64-bit, after installing the GOG version, I followed those instructions EXCEPT I did not install any patches (neither 1 nor 2) or the .net framework, and I went with version 5.9.2 NC. The game seems to be working perfectly, no problems whatsoever. I tried cranking up the resolution, but then couldn't read any of the text, so dropped it back to 1024x768. Looks good! :thumb:
Note: Norton thought the TOEE.exe was a virus, so I had to exclude it from virus scans before it would allow it to be copied.
That's interesting -- I was wondering how they were going to get around the DRM for TOEE. I can remember the no-cd crack that a lot of people used was falsely picked up as a trojan by Norton, so I'm guessing that they have released the game with a cracked exe?
EDIT: I just discovered that GOG have indeed packaged the cracked exe file: (
http://www.co8.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8513) "GoG's ToEE.exe is a crack from GameCopyWorld. It has the same MD5 sum"
Furthermore, it looks as though the method that you have chosen is the most appropriate one as the game is already patched to version 2.
