Poetic:
Well I'm not expecting anything super-deep myself. It's just a fairly cool setting (the ass end of the astral planes), quirky characters and a story that has me intrigued enough to stick with it. It's a change from elves and beards and orcish chaimail anyway. Yeah it's slow and combat is almost treated as a secondary feature, but I can live with that.
Aside from that I was just teasing Dethy.

More fun for me, oh boy!

Poetic [Forumname], you may have missed it but dethtoll admitted that he hadn't actually played through PST, but read a fanfic on it for his Grand Critique. You really don't want to be associated with that level of stupidity as most of the critical bits you list are understandable and I actually agree with them to an extent.
Disliking PST is fine, especially if your reasons are understandable. Disliking it because you're a moron and then never shutting up about your own stupidity and wearing it like a badge of honour on the other hand is liable to get a somewhat negative result.

I don't think you understand the difference between fanfic and text dump, nor do I think you want to understand because that would mean you'd lose the internet, so do kindly give up. It's a shit game- I know because I played it long enough to realize it was a shit game, a fact you like to pretend never happened because you're... I dunno, dealing with some sort of masculine insecurity or something. It's got shit writing- I know because I went to the trouble to read what amounted to a text dump of dialogue and description taken directly from the game- because I certainly wasn't going to play the whole thing just to read a shitty novel. If I want to read a shitty fantasy novel I'll get one at the library, not play some bullshit geek sacred cow that sperglords like you insist is the greatest RPG ever and I'm a retarded illiterate faggot for not liking it.
Seriously, just give up already. I have completely legitimate reasons for not liking the game, and you don't get to say I don't just 'cuz I didn't force myself to play through the entire fucking thing.

...so in this plane, if belief is strong enough, opinions can be presented as facts?
Interesting..

@dethtoll:
Though you're entitled to your own opinion, stating that a game generally lauded by fans of the genre 'is shit', is rather immature imho.
Also you don't need to have read any kind of transscript of the game to form your own opinion, just playing it and discarding it as not your cup of tea will do.
But stating that reading that text gave you any kind of true insight into the quality of the full game is a bit silly, and it also makes me wonder why anyone would do such a thing if they were underwhelmed by the full game's experience.
The graphics, design, sounds, music and puzzles are a big part of the atmosphere of the game, and personally I'd say the atmosphere is 90% of the enjoyment of the game. If only for the music PS:T is worth all the praise it gets.

I love how this gets trotted out every time I try to defend my opinion. Some shitwank always go YOUR OPINION IS NOT FACT. No shit, Sherlock- it's
opinion, and it's
mine. Don't like it? Go masturbate with a supreme pizza.

How? How is it at all silly? The text, being taken
directly from the game, is an accurate representation of the writing in the game. From all the praise it got, I figured there had to be something to it- I simply wasn't going to force myself to continue playing a game I did not enjoy to read it. And that's considered
silly? That I didn't put myself through 20 hours of torture to find out the hard way that the writing isn't really that good? That somehow makes my opinion
less valid? Good to know!
Anyway. You might have a point about the atmosphere if that weren't entirely subjective too. For me it was nothing but a load of LOLCREEPYCOOLDARK. The music was okay though I guess.

I remember hating Shakespeare in high school. Every year we had to read one of his plays, and it was the most boring thing ever. A few years later, in college, I actually saw Hamlet performed. And you know what? It's pretty good. Turns out context makes a difference. Plays aren't meant to be read, they're meant to be watched. And video games are meant to be played.
Do I think PS:T is the best thing ever? Nah. It's incredibly slow to start, for one thing. And even though you don't get EXP for combat, they still felt the need to fill it with random encounters, which makes the slow parts drag on even more.
But it's a game filled to bursting with interesting ideas. An NPC who's the anthropomorphicized concept of the letter O? A library where you can experience other people's stored memories via sight, sound, smell, taste, or touch? Not to mention that the game itself is a giant study on "What can change the nature of a man?" It's bizarre, fascinating stuff, especially for a video game.
It may not have the best gameplay or writing, but the ideas behind it all are interesting enough to make it worth playing for me.

Wait I'm pretty sure you do get XP for fights. 220 for killing one of those bat things in the crypts.
Combat is pretty half-hearted, yeah, although at least it's easy (so far). I'm not hugely into D&D mechanics anyway, hate that spell-memorising system.
Tonamel on 15/10/2010 at 20:16
It's been a while since I've played it, but at the very least the majority of xp comes from progressing storylines instead of combat.
