Yeah, the combat wasn't really Hexen's greatest strength, it was okay but not great. More weapons and enemy variety would certainly have helped.
I liked Hexen for the puzzles and the atmosphere, as Renzatic said the level design was excellent and each level had a different, unique feel to it. I personally loved solving the puzzles and finding out what each switch did, but if that's not your thing, I can see why you didn't like it as much as I did.

It's soooooo gooooooood.
On another note, I just got to the last episode in Blood. I was a bit disappointed in the 3rd episode, so I'm hoping the 4th is a nice return to form.
Got to the mall yet?

Hexen was a positive experience for me overall thanks to the atmosphere, and pushing some really great level designs out of the Doom engine. If the messages when you pushed a switch had been just a bit more descriptive, that would have saved a lot of the annoyances.

Blood's 2nd and 3rd episodes are my favourite in the whole game. Especially since 5 turned out underwhelming.
Cryptic Passage is also fucking awesome.

I really want to like Hexen, but without a lot of patience or a walkthrough, it can be very frustrating. The atmosphere is fantastic though.
As for Blood, I too bought it the other day on sale, and having a real blast with it. Can't believe I'd never played it/barely heard of it before! Or at least I couldn't, until I read that it came out in '97 so was presumably well behind the times technology-wise by that point.

Not all that much, to be honest. Quake had only been out for less than a year, and the industry was still playing catch-up. Blood was definitely on the tail-end of the era, though.
I do believe it sold
much better than Shadow Warrior, though. And for good reason- it's the better game.

I bought it awhile ago and have been playing it on and off. I just finished the 2nd episode today and I'm still enjoying it. I had never played beyond the first episode.
I remember back in the day when it was released, downloading the shareware demo which was a whopping 12 MB download that took me like 6 hours on my 28.8 Kilobaud modem. I was freaking out because my dad didn't want me to download anything because he was paranoid about the internet and I was just willing it to be done before he got home. Luckily I made it. 1.2 Kbps.

Plus Unreal and Quake 2 came out in 97 (I think) and those were the two that sort of stepped up the game in terms of more story-based consistent FPSs. Probably squashed the last sales of any older shooters.
Just came across a sign in Blood that said "Brain Storage: No Zombies Allowed!" and it made me chuckle out loud to myself. I love this game's sense of humour. Dunno where Monolith's sense of humour went tbh - I think F.E.A.R. must have killed it.

LOL. Having mission objectives and flavour text suddenly didn't make them any less brain dead than Doom. Fucking SiN had far more sophisticated storytelling than either game. Also Hexen did what Q2 attempted a lot better.
