Although I do recall the original Zork being available for download on some obscure sites somewhere. I dont remember if they had claimed it was abandonware or some BS like that or if they said it had actually been released to the public like SS1.
Actually, I thought I remembered that too, but since GOG is pretty thorough about these things and contacts the IP owners before releasing the games, it must not have been released as freeware.
And for the record, SS1 isn't either.

I see a Quest for Glory Collection in the future, and that is something I'll probably go apeshit over.
I do too, and I'm incredibly excited since I've never played any of the games except the first one, and that was waaaaay back when it was still called Hero's Quest and had one of the (

I didn't know that! I guess they got bored of the naming conventions. I've never played the original QFG1, just the remake. They never did remake QFG2, so its still a 16 colour type adventure. QFG4 got the SS1 treatment, and after six months of a floppy version or so they came out with a CD-Rom version that had voices and everything, and it was awesome! Always my favorite one, a very dark game. And the 5th one was the first to use 3D, and it was a little more heavy handed on the combat iirc. nonetheless. I've been waiting for the day they announce it, and it really looks like its coming.

Actually, Sierra got into a naming dispute with Milton-Bradley because of MB's board game entitled HeroQuest. Since MB had trademarked the game, they were forced to change and so settled on Quest for Glory.

I liked the QFG remake (which is the only QFG I've played. Although I recall getting screwed a few times by missing some timed event - I think it was picking up a password by attending a meeting outside the town walls.
The one Sierra game I'd personally really like to see get a GoG release is the more obscure Conquests of Camelot.

Yeah, I remember missing that as well. Someone you had to listen in on at the archery target, iirc. The only time I ever stayed out at night was once, and then I got owned by the nocturnal monsters and never stayed out there at night again (unless I stayed at Erana's Peace). Come to think of it, I don't think I ever finished that game.

Ah, yes, I remember that one. That dumb Widdershins and jousting with the Black Knight (why couldn't I just cut his arms off?) and the Mad Monk. Haven't played that one in years either.
Conquests of the Longbow was good too, though it also relied on some timed events on the Watling Street Outlook, iirc.

That just sounds really fucking annoying.

It would be if 'winning' the game is an absolute, requisite outcome. As it is, no, it isn't, and there's a whole fuckton of endings that take your actions into account. It's all about replaying, crossing, diverging from, and re-crossing the paths you took in your previous playthrough. There's even a handy-dandy save system that lets you rewind the clock, as it were, to any point you want. It's a rather brilliantly planned and plotted game, all told; it's probably the first (and maybe only) actual non-linear adventure game ever made.

On paper, yes, it sounds awful. The game designers have brilliantly made this system work, as Sulphur said. It is just so unlike anything else out there that there truly is nothing to accurately compare it to.
