Good shmups for the PC (ok, ok - consoles too)

The game I was looking for (see the second part of this post) was (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/demonstar) Demonstar, but since the other games mentioned in this thread look just as great, I decided to change the topic to be about all shmups.

So post any good shoot-em-ups you remember (I only have a PC, a PS2 and a DS Lite, but post games for other consoles too if you want - maybe someone else will also want to play them too). :cool:

<strike>There was a top-down scrolling game that I used to play quite a lot about 10-11 years ago, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was called.

I remember very little of it so I can't really help narrow down the possibilities, so just list whatever comes to mind - I'm pretty sure I'll remember it the moment I see its name mentioned.

You had a small ship at the bottom of the screen and had to shoot and dodge various enemies and their missiles that came at you from the top. I'm not sure if you could only move left and right at the bottom or also across the whole screen. The version I played was shareware... I think. It had quite good graphics and music.

I know that's not a lot to go on but at least I might get a couple of other similar games that might be even better than that one so don't stint on the suggestions :D</strike>

ABA has his own Galaxian clone, maybe (http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/windows/ttn_e.html) that's the one (Titanion).

EDIT: But then probably not, since it has abstract graphics and was released in 2006.

That's not it, Ulu - the one I'm looking for had better and crisper graphics (also "real" ships and weapons, as opposed to abstract ones, Briareos) and also the screen was split pretty much exactly in the middle - the left side was the actual game window and the right side had all stats - life, weapons, score, etc.

[EDIT]Tyrian still looks quite fun though, so I'll give it a try when I get back home next week.

Sounds like (http://www.mobygames.com/game/galactix) Galactix, which according to Mobygames was ported to Windows around 1999. The DOS game was quite a bit older, however.

All the other games mentioned here look at least as interesting as Demonstar though and I can never get enough shmups, so I'll change the title and first post accordingly. So don't stop with the suggestions. :cool:
