Well, if you're a steam man, there's always Jamestown, which is the only good shmup I've seen released on the PC in forever.

I know it's already been mentioned but i liked playing the shareware of raptor call of shadows when i was little. No idea what it would be like now though.
More of an earthy tone compared to flashing bright colour lasers extreme of most shoot em ups that i've seen pictures of in proceeding years.
Incidentally, looking at the gog version, i don't see how they can call applying hq / whatever scaling filters as "improved graphics" but hey at least they're apparently optional.

Finished Tyrian 2000 recently. The fifth chapter added in the "2000" version is a bit shit, but otherwise it was a blast, and you can't argue with the free price. Would love to play it co-op.

Interesting, so someone else out there has also played Demonstar. Until now nobody else had even heard of it.
Steel Storm was included in the latest indie bundle, and its pretty entertaining.

Seconding Steel Storm. It is a lot of fun. Plus it is 50% off on steam today

Sold! That's £1.99 in UK money, which is a bargain. 2 hours to go on the 50% off, peeps...

I already have it thanks to Humble Bundle, but I'll third the recommendation, and second the rec for Hydorah.
Also, if you have a Wii, there are a TON of good shooters on Virtual Console.
