Title says it all. Recently I played (
http://www.blendogames.com/) Gravity Bone and was quite taken with it (it's not a mod per say but does use the Quake 2 Engine). I'm sure there are many good single-player mods/maps/whatever that have been released over the years that I've missed. What are some of your favorites?
Ostriig on 19/1/2009 at 00:32
For any game, I take it. A relatively recent one for me was (
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13714) The Dungeons of Ivellon for Oblivion. A really sweet horror quest mod, and I can say it gave me a good scare on more than a couple of occasions. Well, I guess YMMV with personal experience on the scare bits, but I'd definitely recommend giving it a try if you've got Oblivion installed.
I found it to be overall beautifully pulled off, with some interesting puzzles/obstacles, and a catchy, tense atmosphere, in no small part due to the ambient sounds which were implemented way better than anything else I've seen for Oblivion (you might think you got it figured out, but every now and then, it still manages to startle you). Throw in one of those advanced Darnified UI mods, that allow you to turn pretty much all of the HUD off while maintaining functionality, and you're in for a nice ride once you get into the actual dungeons.

dethtoll has rec'd a TON of SP mods for Half-Life to me. 80% of which I love to this day. Hopefully, he'll chime in w/them. Afraid of Monsters DC is probably the best.

Gonna list quite a few here, try and keep up:
Half Life 1:
(
http://hosted.planethalflife.gamespy.com/heartofevil/default.asp) Heart of Evil Think Resident Evil meets Apocalypse Now. Models are hideous but doesn't really take away from how awesome this mod is. (
http://www.moddb.com/mods/heart-of-evil-napalm-editon) Remake forthcoming.
(
http://www.moddb.com/mods/paranoia) Paranoia Think Counterstrike: Condition Zero Deleted Scenes with a Resident Evil bent. A bit short but a good way to kill about 3 hours.
(
http://www.moddb.com/mods/afraid-of-monsters-dc) Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut Terrifying and emotionally draining, in the vein of Silent Hill. Despite ruMpel's insistence, the flashlight sucks and the fast drain is a detriment to gameplay; give yourself more battery life per pickup by editing skill.cfg and finding the lines beginning with sk_battery- doubling the associated values will improve the game a lot. (
http://www.moddb.com/mods/afraid-of-monsters) Original version, if you're interested. ruMPel and Minuit are hard at work on a new project called (
http://www.moddb.com/mods/cry-of-fear) Cry of Fear.
(
http://www.moddb.com/mods/they-hunger) They Hunger trilogy The famous one. Quite ugly by today's standards but still awesome, and I'm certain it was an influence on Ravenholm, at least partially. I enjoy L4D's Death Toll campaign because it reminds me of this mod.
(
http://www.poke646.com/) Poke646 and its sequel, Poke646 Vendetta Aside from They Hunger, Poke646 is possibly
the most famous HL1SP mod. Resembling HL2 long before HL2 was even out, it's quite a blast to play and its sequel, while quite short, is pretty badass too. Both are set in the HL universe, where you play a low-paying lab assistant for a private corporation about a year after HL1, left behind in a city being invaded by xenomorphs.
(
http://www.planetphillip.com/posts/dead-sector-half-life/) Dead Sector Not all that scary and entirely in Czech, but certainly very pretty (uses Poke646 textures) and an emphasis on puzzle-solving.
(
http://www.planetphillip.com/posts/black-ops-half-life/) Black Ops A bit of an unknown, still a great mod. Set in the HL universe, and making use of Poke646 textures, you play a black ops agent tasked with finding a scientist carrying a very important briefcase, somewhere in a run-down, evacuated city.
(
http://manke.planethalflife.gamespy.com/darkstar.htm) USS Darkstar Predating They Hunger, USS Darkstar appears to be a kind of retelling of HL1, set on a spaceship. A lot of fun, IMO.
(
http://www.hylobatidae.org/minerva/parallax/someplace-else.html) Someplace Else Single-level prequel to Minerva and manages to actually make Xen an interesting place to be. Lots of fun if a bit difficult, and your friend Minerva is as rude as always.
(
http://www.moddb.com/mods/azure-sheep) Azure Sheep Deserves a mention. It's not quite aged as well as it should have, but it's still a decent game in its own right with multiple routes and interesting locations.
Half Life 2:
(
http://www.hylobatidae.org/minerva/) Minerva: Metastasis Can't go without mentioning this. Best HL2 mod ever made, IMO.
(
http://www.moddb.com/mods/ravenholm) Ravenholm Much loved by me. If you liked They Hunger, or the Ravenholm chapter, you'll like this. Though it really deserves a bit of an update. (
http://www.moddb.com/mods/eye-of-the-storm) Sequel in the works, seems to be far less zombie-packed.
(
http://www.moddb.com/mods/combine-destiny) Combine Destiny In spite of its flaws, it's really quite good. Strong HL1 feel with the endless underground complex thing going on. It's supposedly going to be updated when the (
http://www.moddb.com/mods/combine-destiny-2) sequel comes out.
Classic Doom:
Get (
http://grafzahl.drdteam.org/) GZDoom for most of these. You will need a Doom 2 IWAD to play most of these- I will specify exceptions.
(
http://doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=7694) Mordeth Almost ten years old and the later episodes are quite late, this is still one of the best wads ever.
(
http://doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=11550) Caverns of Darkness Another oldie but goodie.
(
http://doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=11822) Phobos Anomaly: Reborn Requires Ultimate Doom (as in, Doom 1, not Doom 2)- essentially one of the earliest remakes of Knee Deep in the Dead, though obviously only in spirit rather than architecture.
(
http://doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=9597) Phobos Only 4 maps for Doom 2 but provides a sense of realism that you don't otherwise see. Lot of fun.
(
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=12885) Barista- technically standalone but if you like System Shock and Marathon you'll like this.
(
http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Aliens_TC) Aliens Comes in two flavours, Ultimate Doom and Doom 2- I personally recommend the original Ultimate Doom version.
(
http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Action_Doom) Action Doom Play this to get raped in the face by early 90s shooter games.
(
http://action.mancubus.net/) Action Doom 2 Play this to get raped in the face by early 90s brawler games.
(
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/?id=12747) RTC-3057 If you like System Shock you'll like this. Only the first part is out, still, but really quite good. Make sure you play at least the opening in software mode.
(
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=14661) Phocas Island 2 A rather interesting romp through a mysterious island. Doesn't really feel like Doom.
(
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=10782) Darkening 2 One of my favourite wads for
years, both singleplayer and multiplayer. Strong Quake 2 influence.
(
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=13851) Suspended in Dusk Strong industrial setting and excellent mapping. Play it in software mode.
(
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=14651) Hellcore 2.0 Will often go from completely deserted to monster rampage in the space of a few seconds.
(
http://www.doom2.net/~doomdepot/abs-download.html) The Absolution A 95% faithful reproduction of the venerable Doom 64. It's showing its age now, but still quite a blast to play. Comes with its own modified version of Doomsday.
(
http://www.doomworld.com/batman/main.shtml) Batman This thing is so old and it does some of the NASTIEST things with DEHACKED I have ever seen; so play it in (
http://www.chocolate-doom.org/wiki/index.php/Chocolate_Doom) Chocolate Doom.
(
http://www.doomwadstation.com/2006/dark7/) Dark 7 Quake 2-styled mapset set in a cold region.
(
http://www.doomwadstation.com/2006/dark7mpk/) Dark 7 Map Pack Sequel to the above.
(
http://www.doomwadstation.com/2007/slipgate/) Project Slipgate A Quake 1/2-styled series of maps, a lot of fun.
(
http://www.doomwadstation.com/2007/distion/) Dissolution Kind of a sequel to Project Slipgate. Very Quake/D64 styled.
(
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/?id=15496) Cold as Hell: Special Edition An update of one of my favourite mapsets, finally playable on modern source ports.
(
http://kdizd.drdteam.org/) Knee Deep in ZDoom What it sounds like. Requires Doom 1. Might want to grab (
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=15021) the music addon I put together.
There's plenty of others but I'm sick of writing this goddamn thing. So here, check out (
http://www.doomworld.com/10years/) this, (
http://www.doomworld.com/11years/) this, (
http://www.doomworld.com/12years/) this, (
http://www.doomworld.com/13years/) this, (
http://www.doomworld.com/14years/) this, and (

There's plenty of maps and TCs for Duke Nukem 3D but fuck it, I'll just give you the one and add more later: (
http://starshiptroopers.planetduke.gamespy.com/) Starship Troopers.
Hope this post was informative.

What's so great about Minerva, anyway? I'm not trying to imply that it's bad, but I only played the first episode, the one that doesn't require any of HL2 expansions (which I don't have), and... well, I can't say I was really impressed by it.
This mod has apparently been inspired by the Marathon trilogy, but, for some reason, text messages wouldn't display at all and, consequently, I had no fucking clue what was going on and where should I go. It ended up playing like regular HL2, minus the plot and the satisfaction to have achieved anything. From what I recall, even the level ending was somewhat anticlimactic.

oh my god
OH MY GOD
I can't believe I haven't heard about this before now. Especially considering how much it reminds of TTLG darlings NOLF and Psychonauts(to the artstyle). Just too damn short. I hope they're making a sequel.

Aside from the fact that you should go buy the Episodes, you either got a very early buggy version or you tried to play it on a shitbox. Either way saying "what's so great about Minerva" when you haven't even played the entire damn thing properly is amount to saying "I'm pretty sure the moon landing was faked." gg nextmap
No. Terribly broken and the stealth part is annoying as fuck trial-and-error bullshit.

Yeah, that was a frustrating mod. They get an A for effort, though.
