It's the innovative use of space, clever writing that puts GLaDOS to shame, cleverly used special effects (case in point being the waves crashing on the shore, which is unseen in vanilla HL2) and interesting combat situations.

Ok, trying to play (
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/?id=12747) RTC-3057 with GZDoom and ZDoom ports. With GZDoom the .wad plays fine although gives an error when loading save. Have to restart the level. With ZDoom the .wad won't play at all, error at startup. Wondering which version of ZDoom to use since the latest version will not load it.
Check this (
http://cutstuff.net/blog/?page_id=8) ZPortal .wad, using GZDoom atm (Doom2.wad needed). Plays fine, no problems. Never thought I would see Portal in Doom. :)

Get a Life - This one starts off alittle strange with absolutely no action at all going on, and then all of a sudden becomes a huge zombie fest, And then gets even better after that. Awesome final boss battle in Antarctica. This mod even has elements of the Evil Dead movies in there. Has a custom GUI, a bleeding system (as in if you get hurt seriously enough you bleed and need to bandage up otherwise you bleed to death), and superb level design. Highly recommend this one. This one will take you a few days to beat so be warned. Has ALOT of levels.
Gonna second Get a Life as a good zombie shooter. Definitely a long mod, but I thought it was worth the playthrough. There are some pretty creepy, atmospheric levels to be seen here. It was challenging, and you'll probably find yourself wishing for more ammo or health items at the worst times.
If you're interested in Unreal/Unreal Tournament mods, I highly recommend (
http://www.unrealsp.org) unrealsp.org. They've covered every level pack and a few of the total conversions released for the games.

No it doesn't.
I got as far as this one sequence where a couple folks are running across a ruined street at night and there's a gunfight and shit. (this was after the bit with the defensive gunfight) I was so bored by that point I quit.
Thats roughly round the half way mark of the game from memory. Shame you didn`t keep going.
Slasher: Well for Unreal Tournament theres no going past Operation Na Pali. Excellent excellent mod. Though the voice acting is absolutely terrible.

I was just going to post this. :cheeky: Although frankly, the voice acting didn't bother me
that much.
ONP has great level building, excellent gameplay (including some nice COOP segments with nali armed to the teeth) and, a fairly rare thing, new music that meshes almost 100% with Unreal's original tone and quality.
Can people recommend some other good SP UT mods? I played one set in an icy setting, but it didn't impress me so much.

Seven Bullets is another good UT single player mod (you venture in NaPali once again). It too has horrible voice acting but the levels are nice and there's lots of challenge.
There's one major bug in it though but fortunately you can bypass it with noclip cheat. It can occur when you have to enter two pass codes in a certain control room to unlock an item in the same room.

For anyone who enjoys Civilization IV, I heartily recommend the (
http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=11068l) WolfRevolution mod.
Initially I played with just the (
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=171127) Revolution mod, which allows unhappy cities, or those with minority religions, etc, to rebel against their motherland and splinter off into a new civilisation. It also allows Barbarian cities to grow into full-fledged civs, and related options like making everyone start out as 'minor' civs (effectively, everyone is a barbarian state unable to conduct diplomacy until they discover writing). I adore this mod as it makes games a lot more dynamic, so that rather than more or less every civ growing linearly, civs will rise and fall over the course of a game. I've had enormous, powerful AI civs succumb to a rebellion and crumble into nothingness mid-game, and had an AI civ win the game convincingly despite only emerging from a barbarian city around 600AD.
Then I found the (
http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=8322) RevolutionDCM mod, which takes Revolution and adds a lot of things like tweaked combat, better AI, and Influence Driven War which makes combat directly affect a civ's borders (without necessarily having to capture cities).
Then I found WolfRevolution which takes RevolutionDCM and combines it with the Wolfshanze mod, which is a content mod adding many new leaders, some new civs and greatly expanding the naval side of things, as well as giving each civ unique artwork so that a Roman army looks very different to a Korean one.
WolfRevolution is effectively an unofficial third expansion pack and a great one at that. Because of the added content the filesize is much larger than Revolution or RevolutionDCM, which only change game rules, so you could try them first as a quick download.

I recommend the Deus Ex mods Zodiac and Redson 2020. They're both adequately long, and Zodiac has some fantastic music (near the motel and the page building for example). There are also tuns of Doom single-player megawads floating around.
There is also the Operation Na Pali for the original UT, which was pretty good. My friend and I used to play it in coop and I recently completed it by myself (she doesn't play any more):).
SPOILER
The credits map was very cool because you walk through rooms and see pictures of the developers on the walls and it's full of jokes.

I'll participate in the UT echo chamber here and endorse Op: Na Pali as well. :thumb:
Nali Chronicles and Spatial Fear are single player total conversions for UT you might want to look into if you're into that kind of thing.
Deja Vu Gryphon Revisited (v 2) is a 16 map single player campaign that takes place on Na Pali and was created by the unrealsp.org community. Not as long as ONP but I definitely found it enjoyable and it seemed to recapture the mood and atmosphere from Unreal in many places.
Seven Bullets is another good one, and the team behind it is coming out with another UT SP mod called (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eosX8DAv90E&fmt=22) Residual Decay.

2020 was a disappointment, and Zodiac got all fucked up in part 3 but was great until then.
And, uh, lost soul, did you miss the huge fucking post of Doom wads I listed?
