I remember nearly getting someone to let me stick a super-heated door key into their arm under the pretense that I'd then 'let them in my IRL thief club'. Problem is, Thief has become one of those things people let become a substitute for their personality. Like anime often does, sadly.
PS I should probably add the disclaimer that I, of course, love the first 2 thief games. But then that doesn't really need saying here, does it?

Yup, I too, am here because of Thief 2 and Deus Ex being released. I didn't have internet when Thief-Dark Project was released.
I was floored by this place. Only prob. was, I was intimidated by the overall vibe, so I just lurked for 6 years or more.
I am currently playing Thief:Gold and a few of the extreme high-end, fan made campaigns for T2 (in my spare time, that is). I also have been posting a bit in ThiefGen. It is a decent board, but there are a ton of worthless topics/posts. Not to mention all the saccharine-sweet ass-lickery that goes on between one another.
DXGen is nice, but argumentative and heated. D'Juhn does a great job of modding it, though.

DXGen has become like NMA (predominantly courtesy of Zylon and Papy), since the solid info on DX3 started rolling out around last August.
SSGen is fun, thanks to that crazy semi-literate German fella whom keeps posting about his buggy arse Java-written program.
