Ok, so I dont really play any fps games single player much (with a few exceptions like Stalker series), but I do play a fair bit of team and ffa dm at lan parties and such. However, being a group of grumpy old gamers, we have our little circle of games which we have grown to like and know like the back of our hands, so to speak. Its hard to introduce new games, and when someone does, its usually shit anyway and never sees the light of day again.
So here is a list of the usual suspects:
Quake 3 + Unreal Tournament - grouped these together cos they came out around the same time, and those 2 games where all that were played for at least a year. Awesome games, cos we still play em, and they are still great fun. FFA dm in Quake3 is still in my mind some of the most exhilarating fast paced balls against the wall trash-talking combat on pc. The team modes were good, but a little rough around the edges and pretty average AI. UT ffa i didnt enjoy so much for some reason, but the CTF and Seige modes were really well done, with imaginative level design.
Jedi Knight Academy - bit of an odd one, but this has some really different dm and team options. The ctf levels are really good, add in force powers and Star Warsy goodness and you have a long term winner.
Battlefield 1942 - goes without saying. We dont play this one as much as we used to, all the levels seem to big now, lots of running for ages. But for years we played this and its expansions (Desert Combat being the best), great teamplay game.
Far Cry - Ok this is one game that noone else seems to play anymore. Still looks amazing, especially on todays rigs. Most of the levels are really too big for fast deathmatch, but a couple of levels (Monkeybay + Surf) are some of the most fun I have played. Couple that with the awesome weapon physics (way more fun that farcry2), pristine tropical beaches and you have a game that still gets a few rounds every lan.
Stalker:SOC - amazing single player game, but it has a suprisingly good deathmatch as well. Lots of camping with snipers on rooftops, waiting for someone to make the first move. Incredible level design, ruined trainyards, desolate villages, typical Stalker fare. Great for something a little more slower paced.
Call of Duty : Nazi Zombies - ok everyones played this, but man the amount of game hours we have put into this is insane. Its our favorite team game, not really deathmatch I guess. I bought COD WOW just so I could play this mode, never touched single player.
So there we have it. I'm really looking for some suggestion on good team/dm games I may have missed, they dont have to be current games either. Also people could just discuss their favorite deathmatch games as well, how many people here play at lan parties anymore, or is it just all online gaming?

How about Day of Defeat? There's nothing wrong with 1.3 or Source that can't be fixed by not playing with pub tards, and IMO they always did a better job at a WW2 experience than BF42 ever did. BF42 has these huge empty levels without even any ambient noise in the background, you walk for miles never getting anywhere, and the whole thing just feels lifeless. Also, no game that ugly should take that long to load.

Is DOD Half life engine? Never really tried that, or counterstrike or anything, I guess we like our combat a little more over the top? Will check it out though, I remember you mentioning the game before.
Ah yes, loading times in 1942. Back when it first came out I was playing it on some 600mhz amd or somesuch, by the time I had loaded the level, the game was pretty much over anyway.

Yes, 1.3 runs on Goldsrc. As far as I know, you don't need HL1 to play it if you buy it off Steam.
Both are really really cheap, too- Source is $10US, 1.3 is $5US.

If you are interested in coop, Left4Dead is pretty good at a lan party. If you have enough people, versus mode is quite fun (its really hard to get decent games going online some though, would need 8 people for a full game).
You may very well be familiar with l4d, but if not, versus mode is where you have 4 survivors (humans with guns), and 4 "special infected" zombies. They get a random rotation of a number of special infected types, and they try to prevent the survivors from reaching the saferoom. They can spawn hoards of zombies, and have all kinds of fun (timing and teamwork is important).
I wish I knew 8 people that I played things with, as it is, a good game is hard to find.
Another idea: Codename Eagle. Its old as fuck but a COMPLETE BLAST once you get into it. Its all the vehicle madness of bf1942 (CE is actually the precursor), but 100 times more nuts. Its one of the very few games where playing 1v1 with a friend can go on for hours, with only a few deaths, and much hilarity. There are so many vehicles that when you get shot out of one, you can usually jump/parachute/etc into another.
Brief example: You take a tank to enemy base looking for your friend, before you get there he takes off in plane. You get plane and take off after him. Dogfight ensues, you shoot him down, he parachutes into tank. He shoots your plane with the tank (some planes blow up outright, some just catch fire). You parachute out, spamming with gas canisters as you fall. He bails, gets into motorcycle with sidecar and takes off. You grab gyrocopter (hard as fuck to fly but lots of fun once you get the hang of it). You take give chase, as he heads to shack out in the middle of nowhere with rocket launcher in it. You get there and spam him with rockets, blowing up his motorcycle as he finally blows you out of the air with the rocket launcher. Elapsed time: 20 minutes at least. After you finally quit laughing, you fly your plane 500 feet up to the zeppelin that someone parked earlier, and slowly position it over the enemy base and start carpetbombing. While not paying attention, enemy parachutes into zeppelin, fills it full of dynamite and jumps out, blowing it up and parachuting to safety.
This sounds absurd probably but it really is pretty much what happens. This is just 1v1. With more people, the insanity is exponential. There are a number of multi-person vehicles as well. I've really never had more pure fun when it comes down to it, but it was always hard to get a good game together. You can do insane stunts in the planes and pretty much everything else, and there are a ton of weapons. If you get tired of duking it out, you can just do stunts and goof around.
Here is a pretty good place to get started: (

A couple caveats: the netcode is beyond bad. It manages to compensate fairly well, in that things are generally where they appear to be, but control can feel terrible (its truely amazing how good some people were playing online), so lan is pretty much the only way I'd go. A dedicated server is good too, because the host has an advantage over everyone, since even in a lan game there can be lag. You probably will want to also adjust your mouse sensitivity in game for piloting planes and copters (the slider for this in the options is next to useless in multiplayer when lag starts being annoying, you use a console command).
Besides that, the game is an absolute blast once you get the hang of it. I know this post probably seems odd; I didn't intend to rant quite so hard, but once I remembered the game it was kind of hard to stop. I'm really hankering to play now...My favorite maps were Fever Valley (not symmetrical) and Fortress (more or less symmetrical).
If you decide to give it a go and want any help getting things set up, feel free to PM me.

Half-Life2: Deathmatch is awesome. It just never really got off due to the pathetic support from Valve. It's really easy to pick up, but there is quite a difference between a person who knows how to actually play the game compared to one who just started. A plus is that everyone owns HL2 anyways, so they should have HL2:DM for free.

Team Fortress 2.

Yeah, was going to say TF2 is the most obvious one out there, if not CS:S.
I miss LANs. :)

yeh I have a group of dudes who are hardcore pc gamers from like 98, we have been lanning since then its kinda like a club almost. Except we also have jobs and families and shit, but we've kept the lan flame burning, cos there is something awesome about a group of dudes drinking and playing games. Nothing gay at all.
thas right, gay factor=0
