Wow, I played FarCry MP competitively for years. I used to have a video I edited together from hours of gameplay of my best moments. Dunno where the DVD went though. Anyway, MonkeyBay and Surf are excellent. I wish there was still the community that was around 4-5 years ago. Hundreds of us regularly played, and we got to know each other, or at least know the clan. FC and Soldier of Fortune 2 are the 2 games' MP I miss the most. God, I was awesome at them.
I bet my sentimentality resembles what the old Tribes players feel.

I was going to mention Tribes but its near impossible to get into at this point. Its like violin or something, you probably have to start when you are like 12 to have any real chance.

If you have Half-Life, there's an old mod called The Specialists that essentially turns it into Matrix-styled hollywood action. Guns, kung fu, crazy jumping everywhere.

Pariah was a UE2 game that was severely overlooked when it came out. The SP story was difficult to follow and,, basically just crap. but the gameplay and combat was solid. The multiplayer had the same feel as UT2004 but with added mechanics, like weapon upgradeability. My favorite level was a CTF map that took place on a moving train.
It got to be really unbalanced though, there was one weapon that once fully upgraded was basically a multiplayer BFG 9000 and everybodiy who had it spammed the map and made the game not fun anymore, It got to the point where people would host their own servers and state as one of the rules that you weren't allowed to use that weapons firemode at all or you'd get kicked from the server. Aside form that one sticky spot it was a great MP game.
The last time I played it a couple years ago there was only 2 or 3 servers still running worldwide, which was just too bad.
also... why not skulltag or zdoom?

I recommend Urban Terror. This game is like Quake 3, but with realistic weapons, more tactics AND better map design. Nothing puts a smile on my face like chucking a smoke grenade into the enemy spawn area and mowing them down with the Negev. There's plenty of sniper action too if you're into that. :) You can even jumpkick players! Like Team Fortress, this game always has a method of play to suit my particular mood, whether it be stealthy or guns-a-blazing.
This one time, a blue player was coming up the stairwell on uptown to try and sneak up on us reds. I happened to jump down at precisely the right time to do a "goomba stomp" on his head. We had a good laugh at that one.

If you like BF42, there's always Bad Company 2. Sure, the unlocks system is fucking stupid, but if you guys are halfway good at anything you'll unlock most of the good stuff in no time anyway.

Just curious why you say that about the unlocks?
I'll throw down Operation Flashpoint (Cold War Crisis, not that unplayable heap of garbage known as Dragon Rising). Also Sven Coop is a ton of ludicrous fun to play on a LAN. I remember playing They Hunger with a friend being particularly awesome. Oh, nostalgia.
And honestly, I think Call of Duty 4 is my favorite offline deathmath to play locally. I know it's odd since it feels so bare compared to the newer ones, but there's just something about those maps and the way the weapons feel that aren't replicated in the new ones. The map with the four shipping containers is basically FY_ICEWORLD in all its updated glory. IF you were into that kind of thing.
I hope that was coherent I haven't slept in two days.
