That seems like it would make for a far more convoluted control scheme, rather than having combinations for all three attacks, and block.

I thought you just pushed attack and [direction] to make a left/ right/ thrust/ chop attacks in G2? Which took a little getting used to but worked pretty well in the end- I was getting pretty good at it until I decided I really wanted to get NdR before continuing.

Yes, that's correct if you have it set to use the Gothic 1 combat controls. There's an option to use the simplified Gothic 2 combat controls instead, which is what we were talking about.

Strange, I don't remember changing the settings to G1 controls and I'm not sure why I would as I still haven't got around to actually playing G1 (or Arx for that matter, both have been on my list for ages). Does it actually default to the G1 scheme?

Yes, Gothic 1 controls is the default.

If anyone here is interested in Gothic, there is no need to burn yourself out on Gothic 1 before playing 2. Gothic 2 is a gorgeous game - the first felt very so-so after I had played the second. Also have to big up the G2 control scheme here - I think it is the best combat scheme I know of (for this kind of RPG)

Does anyone actually use the G1 control scheme in Gothic 2?
My 1st playthrough of Gothic 2? No. But every time since then I have. The combat is tough enough in G2 (and especially NotR) without gimping it by reducing the attack commands.

I tried Risen instead, since as I understand it's pretty much Gothic IV, and it was quite fun(though nowhere near as open as I thought it will be) until I learned that the only way to increase your stats and learn skills is via NPCs.
Horrible, horrible system.
Nameless Voice on 17/8/2010 at 14:27
Um, but it makes perfect sense that you need to find someone to teach you to be better at combat? :weird:
Koki on 17/8/2010 at 16:02
Yes, but it also makes sense to get better at swordswinging when you swing your sword a lot.
Ideally there would be a skill bar which would increase with use(Dungeon Master style, though preferrably without the silly exploits like standing and swinging your weapon over and over) plus Arcanum style skill training.
Oh yeah, and I dunno about Gothic but in Risen it applies to stats as well. So you gain a level and get absolutely nothing from it other than some talent points which you can't use. Then you visit a guy standing in the middle of a swamp and tell him "make me more dexterous please" and he does
