I'm currently playing through Night of the Raven too. There's definitely something off compared to the vanilla version.
I remember originally fighting my way up the path to the east, gaining a lot of experience both in XP as in actual practicing swordsmanship. In NotR I talked to Lares and he guided me the whole way, destroying any enemy that crossed our path.
Now I'm familiar with the G2 world so I'll manage, but if this would have happened to me in the first runthrough, I'd feel pretty helpless against the enemies left further down.

Half of everything is instantly killing me. There was a friggin orc elite within shouting distance of the town.
And then you get the packs of wargs, which can kill me alone, and they come in 4 packs.
Only having Gothic II: Vanilla I'm pretty sure both those things are present in non NdR G2.
I just run away from them, screaming like a little girl.
It
is quite satifying to come back later and crush them like bugs.

I'm planning to start playing Risen in the near future. Is its difficulty comparable to this game?

What's with this contentless drive-by snipe post? Are you trying to become the Poor Man's Dethtoll?

Yes. Risen being a Gothic game in all but the name, features the same setup of a fully explorable world segmented by different level creatures. So you're bound to cross some that are (too) difficult to slay at first.

Oh do be fair, my drive-by snipes (when I actually do them anymore, gg nextmap) are most certainly not without warrant. I think the proper person you want to insult is Koki.

My key point of contention is not that the drive-by snipes are made in this first place, it's the fact they're still often contentless. You pop in and say something like "You're wrong, XYZ Game is shit." Then you bugger off without elaborating. You sometimes make obtuse generalisations too.
I've called you on this in the past before and I doubt that it'll be the last time either.

hmmm, I found Risen actually easier than G1 or G2. And I never played G2 without the Raven-patch, I don't know about the differences. But I quite enjoyed the different levels and feeling of survival. I thought it was pretty intense to grab a powerful herb under the noses of very dangerous animals in a region I should not be at my level....and then run away screaming and hide behind the gate guards. hehe. It's like when you start the game you make a big list of things you (will) want to do and then when you come back after some work and you squash those bugs without much sweat it's very satisfying. As is battling a higher lvl creature and barley making it out alive. But attacking anything with claws or sharp teeth at the start of the game - not very wise, adventurer.

Well to be fair, "tricking" your puny-ass wuss character into defeating much stronger enemies in RPGs is fun as hell.
