Just because Gothic 3's been mentioned in this thread (in 2009, but still) I feel obligated to say that G3 with community patch 1.74 is perfectly playable and pretty awesome, and that's coming from a guy who worships the ground G1 and G2 stepped on and for a long time thought G3 was shit (and it was shit before the patches). It's HUGE and filled with quests, the loading times aren't quite so bad. It chugs a bit after first running it for 15 seconds or so, but that's it. It's pretty scalable to boot, with plenty of ini tweaks (gothic 3 gametool, look it up). The artificial difficulty has been fixed with the addition of the alternative AI option.
Seriously, give it a chance if you like to run around a huge world, get xp and gp, and not get bored for many, many hours AND can give a little time to get accustomed to the occasional wonkiness.
Yes i already played gothic 3, and i had to use the latest patch in order to fix main quests bugs, with the patch things are much better, even the performance speed, i just didnt like the idea of placing the camera in a way that the nameless hero gets a bit smaller, thats why i still prefer first person view because it feels like your are really inside the game world, but thats not the main issue...Gothic 3 has a irregular and disapointing storyline , the map is just to huge for the few buldings that sometimes are clearly clones of each other, specialy the desert area where its hard to know wich place youve been and whats left to explore, since its a area so empty of reference spots. the gameplay is ok, the soundtrack is nice...the landscapes and weather effects are the best thing of this game, i did enjoy playing gothic 3 but not as much as Gothic 1 & 2 or even "Risen" wich was one of the best rpg games i ever played.

I loved Gothic 3 (even more so post community patch), but weirdly for such a huge game, the ending felt rushed and amateurish. In fact, the whole final area felt distinctly tacked-on.
Then again, Piranha Bytes seem to be pretty bad at endings. I only played vanilla Gothic 2, but the ending there was awful I seem to recall (some bollocks with an undead dragon wasn't it?), and Risen's is equally atrocious, if not more so.
I suppose the real strength of the Gothics is the exploration. I don't think any other series does it quite as well as they do.

You cant expect a outstanding story for a game, if you want a good story then pick up a book, i like to read books because they are the best mean to tell you a story in a complete and high quality way. But for games you cant expect in the first place a excellent story, afterall what most of the people want is a good gameplay, and honestly "Risen" offers a damm good gameplay, the map is not to huge or to small, it has a perfect size, the performance is very fluid, the player mechanics is fine and fluid. the world is gorgeous with a wonderful atmposhere and weather effects, surrounded by a beautiful soundtrack, the buildings design is very good with nice textures, the quests are very captivating, and the story line...well is ok for a game:)

Wrong place to make that argument bub. Besides, I wasn't complaining about story, I was saying that the endings were bad. Whole different kettle of aquatic life-form.

And yeah, the Gothics start strong and end rushed. Probably the only real fault.

HURF DURF harder.
The one game which is universally praised for its strong story you ditched on the grounds that... what was it? "You have to read a lot"?
Buuut someone saying games can't have outstanding stories? Jolly good, someone is offending MY videogames? I better look for an image with text on it on the Internet to express my outrage!
I don't even know why I bother, since you being a hypocrite is like planes flying, I guess it was extremely dumb even for you.

Yes, because having a good story is synonymous with flooding you with book-amounts of text.
