I love that you guys are focusing on my first point and not the much more salient 2nd and 3rd points.
Well, except icemann, who is more or less agreeing with me, which means he's cool. Cool as ice, man
Even supposing that Crisis on Infinite Earths isn't that well known -- and maybe you're right, maybe it isn't now, but it was a Big Deal in the mid-80s, much like New 52 is now, meaning perhaps New 52 and by extension Flashpoint might have been a better example -- the concept of alternate universes isn't limited strictly to comic books, nor do they even have a majority claim on it. Therefore, see #2 in which I explicitly acknowledge this.

That last paragraph could be in Greek or Tagalog for all we care.
The United States during the early 20th century was a profoundly uninteresting place to me. Racism, nationalism, rampant intolerance just about slowly giving way before the first world war - fuck it. BI didn't spin any nuanced tales out of it, and that's fine, because it's a theme more suited to movies, IF, or games without combat.
I was far more interested in the wrap-up of the plot, which had plenty of flaws, not least of which is the fact that the central choice isn't yours to make, but it was a good enough yarn delivered with a wonderful amount of panache. It managed to ask some interesting questions through which - like Bioshock before it - it pulled off a neat trick, but completely failed to acknowledge the answers. I give it an A for effort; Ken should have worked the story kinks out better and focused more on the duo, along with tightening up the narrative, instead of spreading all of those themes out entirely too thinly across the framework of the game.

I've heard that game more or less played itself.
There's a boatload of cutscenes, but I wouldn't go that far, it's not like you're
playing watching a let's play of MGS 4. What there was a whole lot of was Lara getting hammered, the devs really had it in for her. Should've changed the tagline to "a PTSD patient is born."

I do agree with you some of the time. This being one of them. Just don't go getting used to it :p.
I can't comment on the comic related stuff as I was never into those at all. Was more of a table top wargamer (warhammer fantasy + 40k mostly) + sci-fi and fantasy book reader when I was younger.

No, you just lack reading comprehension. It's not that hard to understand, if you fucking pay attention: AUs are a common theme in sci-fi. There. Are you happy now? I've dumbed it down for you.
Should I dumb it down further?
alternate universe very sci fi, such common, wow
Still not enough?
herp derp alternate universes everywhere buh derrrrrrrppppSwear to God, some people...

It's hilarious that the first thing BSI's plot would remind you of is a comic when they used a plot device that predates the invention of the printing press. Plus, any reasonably literate person would immediately equate it to Mostly Harmless, which it basically rips off point for point.

2) I say "comic book" but the truth is I really mean "sci-fi in general" because alternate universes and alternate histories are a very common theme.

I don't think anyone really claiming it's an original idea, just that they enjoyed the way it was implemented.
june gloom on 19/12/2013 at 13:26
Nice job changing the subject.
Jason Moyer on 19/12/2013 at 13:51
Did I miss something, or were you trying to make a point besides the usual "omg someone had this idea before, therefore it sucks" thing.
