So I guess I'm the only one who's really enjoying this game then?
Don't get me wrong: installation was a pain. Two DVDs of stuff, then being forced to register for Rockstar Social Club and Games for Windows Live, then having to install SP3 was a huge waste of time at best. But it wasn't quite the nightmare it's being described as.
Maybe I've been battle-hardened by having installed Steam for HL2 over dialup ;)
Game runs fine on my exceedingly modest Pentium D/3 Gig RAM/HD 3870 set-up; graphics not exactly cutting edge, but since when was GTA about the graphics?

Sounds like they used the ArmA engine.
What was wrong with the ArmA engine? Runs fine for me on full detail on an 8800gt, as long as I don't set the view distance to 5 miles or something ridiculous. Even the default view distance of 1/4 mile is further than any game I can think of that doesn't use LoD balancing.

No, you are not the only one. I enjoy GTA4 too. I bought it off Steam and didn't face into any of the installation errors.. Maybe I am lucky that I kept all of my systems/drivers up to date.
Yes, the graphics are not as crisp as say, L4D or Fallout 3, but this is GTA. The details and level of activities that is happening in the game world has made up to the jagged-ness of the graphics. And it's not that bad actually, if you look at it as a whole.

No, I'm enjoying it between every 15min crash or lockup. Hell, last night I got through 3.5 entire missions before it dumped me to the desktop.

Sounds like the best way out is the console version.
This multiple DRM shitfest combined with the game's ÜberCrysis system requirements make GTA IV seem far too much of a hassle to get working on the PC.
I'm sure that most people will either skip the game or buy the console version now with all the bad press the PC version's garnered. 2K can then moan about 'poor sales' on the PC and during the next financial review bulletpoint it as a reason to make their future games go console-only.

I'd certainly like to play GTA 4, just not enough to buy a 360 or PS3.
Hopefully they'll get this thing patched up to the point it's a viable PC product.

QFT
However, it does look quite yummy on a PS3 so I'd expect it to be up to par on a PC with more power.
Anyways, this game is immoral SD and you of all people shouldn't be playing it.

I read somewhere that GTA IV is heavily CPU intensive and not so much of a GPU intensive. I wonder if it is true. Anyone with a Quad core running at higher resolution has success stories to share? I will have - after my Steam version completes it's download (and provided I manage to install successfully :D :D )
This is actually true. Im using my 8800gtx, E6600 and 4gb ddr2 pc6400. First time around i played with a cpu clock of 3 ghz, and it felt somewhat choppy with some settings (too lazy to check whic). But then i upped the cpu clock to 3.3 ghz and it felt a bit smoother actually.

I wouldn't complain about the graphicsat all if not for the texture artifacts (never seen anything remotely like that before in any other game) and the HIDEOUS shadows. I wish there was an option to turn shadows off completely, I wager that would raise my appreciation of the graphics considerably.
After a lot of system and game tweaking experiments I finally got the game to a somewhat playable state. Impressions: Euphoria still needs a lot of tweaking, bit it's indeed the future. Raises the movie-ness of shootouts tremendously.

Still, a shitty shitty port as stated before. The first sign is probably when you notice the controls for the Xbox controller is still there, or they mention the controls as "sticks" and "buttons". Only seem to be the Xbox360 ports that turns out to be crap. If they only scrapped that shit system long time ago, Ps3/Pc/Wii is more than enough. But now people have to suffer (you know, like they suffer in Africa) due to Xbox exclusives, and developers having to port games to that sh*t console just because of lost sales.
