And if you want horror, I'd suggest taking a look at Junji Ito's mangas. Horror is kind of hard to do in comics, but Uzumaki's descent into apocalyptic Lovecraftian weirdness actually manages to be proper scary.
Checked out Junji Ito - great stuff. Quirky Lovecraftian horror. I just had to learn to read frames right to left. My reading stack is getting too large to keep up with, but he is now on the list.

I see sarcasm is lost on you!

That was sarcasm? Because it seemed to me that it was more of a lame joke.

Aaaaand finished reading yesterday All-Star Superman. My, that was fun and an interesting take on ol'Kal-El.
I've stopped being a Supes reader ages ago, but I still like to read the stories -inside the DCU or alt. projects like this one- that have that extra UNF to them. The Elseworlds' universe was another fertile ground for many interesting "what if...?" Superman stories.
I just stopped collecting single issues a long time ago. Guess graphic novels and tpbs have spoiled me, prefering to get a full story arc or a nice chunk of comics in one go rather than letting it trickle down my way issue by issue, hah!
Also? Less publicity between pages, heh.
I got Night of the Owls to go, which is pretty much a side/in-between story with all the DCU titles that involved the Court of Owls story arc from Batman. Hope they release the Death of the Family story arc in tpb format soon.
Man, I dunno why I just remembered the ol'Batman saga, Legacy. That shit was EPIC! R'as and co. doing shit as usual -trying to wipe 95% of the World pop- and we even got a decent-ish Bane (still muscly brute, but less so) thrown in.

Bane has actually been pretty good in the comics I've been reading (certain arcs in Gotham Knights from the early 2000s.) It seems for a time he actually even tried his hand at being a good guy.

I didn't mention it before.
I was never the biggest comic reader, but there are a few I read.
The one that I actually follow the most is for a reason on top of enjoying the story & art itself, and that would be Lupin III manga in Japanese, as part of my Japanese practice. It seems I pick up a new volume every time I go to the comic shop, and when I go to Japan I pick up like 4-5 at a time. I've got a big stack here, and the margins for each one are filled with all my translation notes. For one thing, the art helps cue me to the meaning, and unlike a movie or tv show I can take my time to understand each sentence. And then the thing is, if I'm going to spend that much time translating it, it better be a fun story! And I've just found Lupin comics are consistently always fun for me.
Other than that, every time I see a Jason comic (the Norwegian minimalist furry comics), I can't help myself buying it. I'm a sucker for really minimalist comics generally though, and that will often be the one I buy when I'm browsing around... Something like Kochalka's Monkey vs Robot would be another of that type.

As others have already suggested, Walking Dead is good stuff. The most recent thing I have been reading is (
http://www.wormworldsaga.com/) The Wormworld Saga. Unfortunately it is still in development so there's a bit of waiting after you read whats available.

dema - I've only seen the classic anime TV show and some of the movies, the famous Castle of Cagliostro as well as an origin story movie from 2005 or so, and I've loved it all. I'm sure the manga's great fun :)

Bit of an Ennis fan here, and you really can't go wrong with his Punisher Max run, for me the definitive Punisher and probably the best thing Marvel have published in years.
He's also just finished The Boys; basically, Ennis answers the question "Who watches the Watchmen". The series probably peaks with Herogasm. Can't believe they were considering turning it into a PG movie.
He's also bringing his Punisher Max treatment to "Fury Max", a contemporary, grounded-in-reality take on Nick Fury. The character popped up every now and again in Punisher Max, so Fury's just examining the character more in-depth.
You can definitely see Ennis' background in war comics here.
It has been mentioned here before, but yeah, Walking Dead is superb, although it can dip in quality with every other TPB release. The last one was devastating however and raised the game again.
"The Sword" from the Luna Brothers is a fantastic read; it's only 4 TPBs, Fire, Water, Earth and Air, but it kicks all sorts of ass.
Another complete run that I would recommend to anyone is Y: The Last Man. Every male on the planet apart from one Yorrick and his pet capuchin Ampersand, dies. It handily avoids the clichés one would usually associate with such a story and is in general a remarkably touching story.
One I took a chance on recently and am thoroughly enjoying is Morning Glories. The story reminds me of Lost when it was at its best. There's a lot of weirdness and terror going on, and it keeps you constantly on your toes.
Of course, it's also worth looking at some of the touchstone books from the big 2, DC and Marvel, such as "Kingdom Come", "Civil War" and "The Death of Captain America".
If you want something old but utterly fantastic, try The Ballad of Halo Jones from Alan Moore, Ian Gibson and 2000AD. It's a shame the creators will never revisit it, but it's still a seminal work as it stands.
