Somewhere in the freebies thread I mentioned that Gravitron was the best Thrust-like game I'd ever seen.
The author has now made (
http://xout.blackened-interactive.com/Gravitron2.html) Gravitron 2, and it is
absolutely awesome.
It's not free, but it's close, and is definitely the best $5 I've spent in a long time!
For those familiar with the original, it's quite a bit easier this time around... to start with, at least. Things get much harder as you progress :)
There's a demo, and at ~12MB it's dial-up friendly as well, so go and check it out. There are screens and a video at the site.
I shall now (
http://xout.blackened-interactive.com/Gravitron2/HiScores.php) boast shamelessly while I still can :)

I see that this has just gone up on Steam as well. Personally I can't imagine why anyone would get it on Steam when they could get it NOT on Steam for the same price (and with presumably rather more of that $5 actually reaching the author), but I believe some people have the kind of love for Valve's system that would cause them to so such things. If you are one of those people, check it out :)

For those who already have Steam installed, purchasing and downloading of games is both convenient and secure.

I was being a bit facetious, I admit. I don't think I'll ever actually like Steam, so I couldn't resist taking a bit of a pot-shot in the process of passing the news on. Sorry about that.
So, anyone else playing this, or is it just me?
One important thing to note is that the options menu is only available after you start playing (press Escape), so if the default controls / sensitivity aren't to your liking, that's how to change 'em.
Note also that mouse and keyboard controls are active simultaneously, so you can use the keyboard for shields instead of the middle mouse button (the latter is pretty awkward unless you're the sort who uses a different finger for each button).

I didn't like Steam at first but once I got used to it I have found it to be a fairly painless medium for purchasing games; and often at much cheaper prices than both you and I are used to in the Antipodes.

For these small indy games, Steam's ideal.
I've bought loads over the years, and trying to install them again further down the line can be a nightmare of sifting through ancient emails for serial numbers and digging about in old hard disks for installers.
Steam takes that hassle away.
I even went so far as to buy Gish again because of such issues.
That and I got it while it was on a stupidly cheap special offer.

Well, I went ahead and bought it, if only to support smaller developers.

Enjoy! :)
BTW, if you find mouse control frustrating, try keyboard-only. I use A & S to rotate, SHIFT for thrust, SPACE for shields, RETURN for fire (mimicking the default Thrust controls on the BBC Micro), which I find far easier to use than the mouse (even if the mouse is more precise).

Hah, those controls remind me of the days spent playing Star Hammer on my first PC.
