Hello Taffers, and all Fellows!
I may not be the first person to post this, but here is a great amateur insight what makes gaming good, and why this community has lasted so long.
edit: here is the right link -

And although I misspelled "gameplay" in my first post.. I have big plans to practice and practice very hard for next year's big spelling bee.

What community?
PigLick on 30/8/2016 at 05:21
One would assume from the video content and the use of the word "taffers" he means the thief community.

As for the video, of course it's preaching to the choir around here, but I found its diagnosis spot on.
So often when I think about contemporary game design, especially exactly the things this video talked about & related things I notice (maps, waypoints, popups, achievements, linearity and railroading, etc), I have that feeling that the Emperor has no clothes, and is anybody else even noticing this? Because you don't hear anybody else even raising what this video is taking for granted. Is it just that the bling is so overpowering no one sees the differences in the entire landscape? Or do they see it & just have a fundamentally different interpretation of it?
By this time, I've developed a reflex to gauge a person's first reaction to a thing before talking about it.
It's like when Avatar came out. You say the word "Avatar" to people on the street, and they instantly light up and say "Oh, best movie ever! How did they do it?" Then I know we're talking about bling. I'm happy to join along because I can appreciate the eye candy & romp of it too, but I also know to hold back my deeper opinions about it too because they won't connect.
Then you come to TTLG and the instant reaction is, "Eh... It looked nice but ... eh." And I think finally I am among my people, and we can actually talk about it in some depth.
Edit: Two things I'd respond with though. (1) I think game devs, or a lot of them, know exactly the differences. So I wouldn't say they're oblivious. They just know what they need to have, design-wise, for the market environment we find ourselves in. And it's hard to blame them given how cutthroat & unstable dev work is.
And (2) there are indie & homebrew games coming out that are still cutting edge stuff. So it's not like a totally lost art. But I think indie & homebrew devs have to be more limited in their ambitions, and they can't afford to be so confident & structured in their design thinking as a well funded studio would be. So there's still an issue here.

But he posted this thread in gengaming, so that wouldn't make sense.

Sorry if I posted in the wrong place? "General Gaming" seemed to be the correct forum. Didn't think just Thief FM's was the right forum for the link, and actually all the games/gaming that TTLG supports here is the community I mean.
Just wanted to share what I thought was a good insight on gaming. Have a great day Taffers (and all others)!

I'm a "she" not a he.. LOL ;-)
No worries.. I have a cryptic nickname.

This thread is a fine example of why this community has lasted so long. 1 posts actually replying to the topic and 4 discussing irrelevant details and whether it's posted in the correct place. You gotta gotta squeeze as much potential discussion out of each thread, y'see. Make it last.

Henke, post relevant to TTLG and its community as a whole belong more in Concerning TTLG rather than General Gaming. I'll let it slide this time, but try to remember to always try to post appropriate posts in their appropriate subforums.
Also, yours isn't a cryptic nickname. IT'S PUNKY BRUSTER, YO!
