On the subject of "Top XXX of XXX" lists, I recently leafed through a book called "1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die".
The good news is, that instead of going by preference, they go by order of release, so the oldest game is No 1, and the youngest game is at 1001.
The better news is, that both Thief 1/Gold and Thief 2 are in there.
The bad news is, that some of the choices are... odd, to put it frankly, and the explanations/justifications for them being included borderline on insane.
I've seen loads of lists like these before, but this is the first one that was published in a book, and it confirms my earlier suspicion: These lists are crap. All of them.
Most of them aren't even put together to try to make a definitive list: They're only put together to generate website traffic, meaning ad revenues. In the case of the aforementioned book, some sort of panel or committee was assembled, which may sound like a good thing, until you realize they're gathered from the gaming journalism profession... I'd rather talk to the local Thieves' Guild than that bunch of cretins.

That list is an old-school collection. The old releases, let's say, are OK, but I see COD4 MW there and I don't see the other real gems, the elites of the game industry (don't forget we are in 2012!). Or these are his/her favorites? OK. But then don't say "Greates Games of All Time" if you put only your favorites on the list. Where is F.E.A.R., Prey, Singularity, Far Cry or Crysis? And where is the eternal favorite Duke Nukem 3D, Hexen, Heretic or Blood? Come on...
