I'm actually responding to my own response that I just left on the Risen thread.
Does anyone else think we need something different for a change? I was just looking at the big triple A titles coming out for the holidays, and it leaves me feeling disappointed.
You've got Dragon Age, usual fantasy shit, the latest COD title, usual FPS war crap, ME2, usual Bioware game, I personally found the first overrated, Assassins Creed 2, never played it so I guess shouldn't comment on, but heard the first wasn't that good as well. Dozens of MMO's that all seem the same. (although I have been playing some of D&D online and while not perfect, it's at least different).
I've even been trying some adventure games for something away from the norm, and there're all the same as well. Go here, pick this up, go there pick that up, then figure out some ridiculous puzzle that has no bearing on the story.
Maybe I'm playing the wrong games, and then again, maybe I am just to old and jaded, but it seems like everything that comes out is just a rehash of something else.
I've been playing TNM, the DE mod, and frankly it's been more enjoyable than some of the relatively newer games I've played. And I"m looking at you HL2, FO3, ME.
I'm not saying there's no innovation, just seems like there could, and should be more.

I am so fucking sick of this "I can't enjoy anything new" mentality that seems to be striking some long-time gamers a lot as of late. It's stupid and is just the first step to becoming a humourless unpleasable fuck like the ones who post at NMA. If you've reached the point where you can't enjoy new games for some arbitrary reason you can't really explain other than "t-t-they're not innovative!!!!!" (which is fucking stupid) and you're just playing the same games from 10 years ago over and over it's time to put away your video games and stop being a gamer because you will never ever be satisfied at all ever again.

Protip: Stop playing games.

Go play The Path. There's the sorta innovation that goes both ways for lotsa people. Dunno how well it did. I liked it though. Innovation isn't always encouraged or perceived as a good thing. Finding really fresh and new ideas in AAA games is rare. Budgetary concerns. Return on investment. That sort of thing. Mainstream gaming is mainstream. Woo.
As far as promising things in the way of AAA titles go, Heavy Rain looks to actually do something different, more organic and seamless with narrative, which is why I'm looking forward to it.
You want risky shit, there's plenty of experiments. Indie gaming's chock full of intriguing stuff to make you chomp at the bit. (
http://ludomancy.com/games/today.html) Today I Die, (
http://www.kongregate.com/games/TerryCavanagh/dont-look-back) Don't Look Back. Stabs at interactive narrative - (
http://www.interactivestory.net/) Façade. The mod scene - Dear Esther. Korsakovia. Weirder shit too, like a second-person shooter mod for UT2004 the name of which I forget. And tons more.
Interactive fiction, even. Gold like Galatea, Shrapnel, Narcolepsy, one-move narratives like Aisle and Rematch... even jokes like 9:05 (and it's an awesome joke. (
http://zmpp.sourceforge.net/games/play.php?name=9:05%20%28Adam%20Cadre%29&storyfile=905.z5) click. needs java to work).

What do you think of Brütal Legend? Certainly not the "usual shit".
Taffer36 on 12/10/2009 at 19:16
This is absurd.
You have purposefully sought out the triple-A games where the entire design philosophy of those games is for them to be a culmination of what has been proven to work in gaming so far. This culmination does indeed creates a great game.
However, there are PLENTY of games that disregard this design philosophy and attempt something new. You're clearly looking in the wrong places.

As to the bulk of responses, perhaps all of you guys are right.
But I'm not saying all games. As flawed as Indigo Prophecy was, I found it more enjoyable than say a HL2, which was by far the slicker more heavily hyped game. (BTW; HL1 was the better game overall). I mean how many times can you play the same guy in a game, with the same paper thin plot?
I absolutely loved VTM Bloodlines, excellent game.
I also played an adventure game called The Lost Crown recently. And while it had some of stupid conventional things they all have, it at least attempted some different shit.
I could give some other examples. I mean it's not all bad. As to TNM and my taste in games, it's obviously all subjective isn't it?
Tonamel on 12/10/2009 at 20:16
How was The Lost Crown? After the massive disappointment that was Scratches, I'm leery about anything the adventure gaming crowd calls brilliant.

The new Operation Flashpoint for the 360 has me mildly intrigued, but I won't cough up the bucks at this point. The intrigue lies mainly in the fact that it is a sequel to a classic... I usually spring for those even though I'm an aging gamer who is finding much repetition in games, too.
I still remember being 1000% impressed with the original OF - at one point, I stole a Hind, loaded up my crew, landed them close to our objective, then provided air support myself as I directed them on an attack. That was one of my "HOLY FUCKING SHIT THIS IS COOL" moments in gaming... makes me want the new OF.
Malleus on 12/10/2009 at 20:36
You aware that those who made the original OFP have nothing to do with the new one? It's OFP only in the name, otherwise it's a vastly different game.
