As flawed as Indigo Prophecy was, I found it more enjoyable than say a HL2
I reiterate: stop playing games. If you can make asinine statements like this, there's nothing left for you.

How was The Lost Crown? After the massive disappointment that was Scratches, I'm leery about anything the adventure gaming crowd calls brilliant.
I really enjoyed it despite some of it's shortcomings. Personally I suck at puzzles and while the game had it's share of them, it wasn't
all puzzle orientated like some of them seem to be. The ghost hunting equipment was a lot of fun and there were a couple of times I jumped in my seat because of the scare factor.
After playing the game I had questions about the ending, (which was pretty vague btw) and went to a couple of adventure game forums to see if I missed anything story wise. Apparently I didn't as there was this huge discussion with all kinds of theory's about the ending.
I looked at a couple of threads at those forums and apparently there's a game called Still Life that's considered the creme of the crop in the AG world. So I went out and bought the game. It was actually pretty good, until I got to this puzzle that had you baking cookies of all things. Not relevant to the story that I could find, and I never finished it.
Just saying that because I agree with you. I'm also leery what they say over on those forums.

Someone needs to mention The Void here. I don't know how far it goes to break the mold of convention, but it at least looks different than most stuff out right now.

You aware that those who made the original OFP have
nothing to do with the new one? It's OFP only in the name, otherwise it's a vastly different game.
Not at all... thx for the tip. I take it this one will be like MW2? All of the COD rehashes feel very much like the original to me.

Ooops! Here comes that word subjective again.
HL2 was a brilliant game for what it was. Cutting edge graphics for the time on a very scalable engine, great precise controls, and physics that actually seemed somewhat real.
My problem with it was it was no different than it's predecessor other than looking better and the physics. Oh yea, and it had vehicles. Weakest part of the game as far as I'm concerned.
But a simple linear shooter is still a simple linear shooter no matter how you look at it. The game lacked the charm and innovation of the original.

He should stop having fun and participating in a major media form because....what? His enjoyment hierarchy doesn't match yours? Get over yourself.
Anyway, while it's true that most games are pretty derivative, I think this is true of any art form (or media form, if you don't consider games an art form). You just have to search out the other stuff. There's a huge indie gaming scene that does all sorts of interesting stuff. Just in the past year, I've played a number of games I've considered innovative: Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, Scribblenauts in gameplay, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden in presentation. And then there's stuff like Gravity Bone, which are innovative in gimmicky but very key ways.
Things probably "feel" less innovative because it's harder to cover truly new ground and invent new genres after you leave the infancy stages of a medium. And since games are big business with big budgets, there is more caution in game development. But there's still a HUGE number of games being produced commercially and even more independently - you just have to look. (
http://www.tigsource.com/) isn't a bad start if you're looking at indie games, though there's plenty of other sites.
And if you find enough "innovative" stuff, you can pad it with less innovative but still really well-made games. I'm currently working my way through Metal Gear Acid 2, and while it's in no way innovative as its predecessor, it's loads more fun. Mechanics matter too.

Well, it's not a CoD-like straight action game, it's a tactical shooter allright, but it's more of a successor to the old Delta Force games than OFP. If you're looking for a game similar to OFP, check out
ArmA 2. It's actually made by the same company that made OFP back then (Bohemia Interactive), and it feels the same and obviously has a lot of improvements over OFP. Unfortunately, it has it's fare share of bugs (though it's being patched), and it's a bit unoptimized, but definitely worth a try. A demo is available I think.

Aw yeah, forgot about that. And how in heck did I forget about Pathologic too? Soon as I get the gamebox working (and fuck knows when that'd be but enh) I'm gonna paint every woman I meet into a climax so hard that they fart particle effects into the soughing winds that whisk and strop the ever weatherbeaten middlebrow of pretentious-yet-delicious intellectual gaming.
And I'm gonna love every fucking second of it. :thumb:
And I really am serious about this.

If you want originality- or iterative games so good you don't mind their formula- then Eastern Europe and or independents are pretty much the beginning and end point. With AAA games costing $20 million or more the only thing the publishers are interested in is making sure they sell at least the 1 million copies needed to break even.

If you're talking originality Half Life 2 is an unabashedly
shit game. There's nothing original about it at all- doesn't necessarily make it a bad game overall but if you're complaining about games being unoriginal then FO3, [Bioware Game], HL2 etc are perfectly valid targets. Everything about HL2 is an iteration of what has come before.

Pretentious intellectual gaming? Ain't no art for me. I'm just in it for the naked titties and pretty colors.
