http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i106/jtr7/dan_blomberg_08_MaybeThief4.jpgIt's possible that the protagonist in THI4F could have a gun...Is this appropriate?...or is
Garrett with a gun an utter blasphemy?
-----------------------------------------------------------
I would say
no gun allowed for Garrett, because:
1) SILENCE - THIEF is a pure-stealth game, and the silence of the bow is essential for maintaining an unknown location whilst executing ranged actions...One shot from a gun, and it's "hello everyone in the vicinity, here I am!".
2) VERSATILITY - The versatility of the bow utilizing the various arrow types make it the elegant and intelligent choice...Again, there is no contest here when compared to the gun.
3) CREATIVE APPLICATION - The bow, with the assortment of arrow types, encourages one to
think and creatively apply themselves in a much more dimensional way than the dumb, one-dimensional gun.
4) CONTINUITY - Garrett was trained with the bow, and has used it expertly over the years...He would never trade it in for the lesser, undesirable gun.
5) NO!...JUST NO!...

The argument isn't dependent on the presented image, which can neither be proved or disproved...What's important, is the consequences of this possibility, and how people feel about it for THI4F.

Guns have no place in Thief. I have spoken and declare the matter settled. Good. Now everybody fire up a good FM and have some fun.

Well said, Vae and Sly. Well said indeed.

I wouldn't mind seeing guns in Thief, to be honest. We already have mech battle robots and security cameras and explosives (etc.) that seem far more out of place in the Thief universe, so guns would be a natural addition compared to those. Adding guns doesn't necessarily turn the game into a FPS killfest, and it wouldn't necessarily render the bows and swords useless either - if done right, it would add a new tactical element in the game. Maybe more people would tolerate the idea if guns were called "magical steam-powered boomstick" instead. :p
Of course I don't see guns as any kind of a necessity, in fact I'd be more than happy if they removed all the silly robots and stuff from the game. But the damage has already been done in the older Thief games, so with that in mind, I think that having guns in Thief could actually be really cool. Perhaps not as Garrett's (or whoever the protagonist is) main weapon though, I do prefer the bow, but guns could have their special uses and it could be the "last resort weapon" that you can use if all else fails and you're forced in a combat situation, a bit like fire arrows in other Thief games (not that I ever had to use them, as it was always easy enough to just run away, or blind the enemies with a flashbomb and then just knock them out one by one).
And obviously I'm not talking about machine guns or sniper rifles with laser scopes here, but about rather simple, primitive handguns or muskets. By that I mean firearms that are terribly slow to reload, and that are only effective on short range and hopelessly useless when the target is a bit further away.
My final thought on the matter (for now): I'd much rather see guards with guns patrolling the city streets, than any of those stupid robots again. :p

Stupid robots, damage? Wow! Thief 2 wouldn't be Thief 2 without them, and Thief 2 is a great game.
Back to the topic, I don't want to see Garrett with a gun but I am not sure about the guards. ıt would be good actually, they have a gun, you don't, so better be stealthy! :)

I feel guns would have a place in Thief, but possibly as a plot point or a challenge to the player. If guns + more heavily armed guards were used in, say, later and more challenging missions, I feel it would be a sign to the player that the game "just got real". There are many narrative techniques to work in a sense of unease about guns, to the point where, from a canonical standpoint, Garrett would not use them.
For one, they're loud, and Garrett is a quiet sneaker.
For two, the Hammerites (or whomever oversees their distribution) may restrict them, as part of City law or some other tenet.
For three, they could be considered exceptionally unreliable. Guards who are trained in the barest basics may have stories of blowing fingers and faces off, and perhaps, in a cutscene or in-game scene, Garrett gets to see this first hand. Combined with the aforementioned idea of mixing tension in with the arrival of guns, could this be enough to make him go, "No thanks, I'd rather live?"

I still feel that guns would just ruin the whole ambience of the Thief world. Afaic, T2X, though an amazing accomplishment, was not my cup of tea and I honestly didn't appreciate the guns included in that FM - among other things. If you give guards guns, then how would you explain the fact that Garrett doesn't own one too, since he'd pretty much have to have one to level the playing field or the game would get pretty ridiculous pretty fast.
No, keep your guns for your FPSs, I'll stick to my blackjack, sword, & bow.
Oh yeah; and flashbombs.
:p
