GUN vs. BOW!...Fight! - by Vae

Or we are. Depends. There's no gun powder, but there's this alchemical stuff, invented by a Hammerite over 50 years before the Bafford job, and the stuff is weaker than any gun powder or black powder we got. And then the projectile launchers are either huge steam-charged barrels or throwing-machines, or little handheld crossbows, and nearly every projectile launcher has inexhaustible power and ammo, so the purpose of those mechanics needs consideration, 'cause it was purposeful. The mere presence of guns needs serious modification to keep players from dropping into typical FPS mode, and anything that encourages run-n-gun play should be reconsidered to keep things psychologically different, even when they are the same in general terms.

Agreed.
I am happy with no guns, but If there will be guns, then it should be only for guards, specific guards, not all of them. It has to be hard to use, and complicated. For example, even Garrett steals gun, he shouldn't be able to use it.

Yep. But guns might be useful in other ways for Garrett, like have great monetary value or maybe making allies. Of course they should be a real challenge to steal, too, so they shouldn't be in the hands of every drunken street-guard :)

Isn't that one of the most annoying things in computer games? You find a cool weapon or gadget, but you aren't able to pick it up and use it. It makes me sad. :(
In my opinion the best solution would be to let the player use all the weapons that the guards have, but just don't make any of those weapons overpowered compared to the others. Noisy and slow-firing musket vs. Silent and quick(er)-firing bow... isn't it quite obvious which one would still be the logical choice for a thief?
Oh, and I do agree with you and Vasquez that the guns should be somewhat uncommon. Even though I'm starting to like the idea of having guns in Thief, it'd still be sad to see the bows and swords gone altogether.

The run-n-gun approach doesn't seem very healthy if the guns are like (

How cool is that musket though? I love how it sounds when it's fired and all the smoke that comes out of it (you can see it better in (

I hate to stall any arguments but, more Bow-praising:
If Minecraft has a bow and it works great, then why shouldn't Garrett still have one? :cheeky:

Hmm in Dishonored this is done quite right (so far at least, I'm only at the fourth mission). Not the same game, but similar enough! I'm carrying the gun, but haven't used it once - way too noisy.
