You have to keep at it until the blood re-establishes itself in your alcohol stream.

It usually takes longer than that.
Eat well, stay hydrated and make sure you have good rest. And do some exercise.

Sensible advice. Its actually a lot harder than I thought it would be, I have become somewhat of a hermit, pretty much avoiding social outings etc, the temptation is very hard to resist. I am in a similar situation to Scots except it was more like "stop drinking right now or you'll be dead in 12 months".

Finding other ways to socialise is the hardest part. Even doing other stuff like kayaking / picnics etc has a high chance of ending with a couple of pints if the weather is nice and there's a tempting beer garden.

Absolutely you need something else to do instead of your usual routine. This is probably the most important thing actually and it's the same if you're quitting smoking. But it only takes a few months to get out of the cycle and as long as you don't revert to form you've a good chance of being okay. Taking up a new hobby is a great way of changing the routine. Start running, gyming, doing a martial art, going to art galleries, building cars, destroying moons, growing jungles.

Yeah, I ditched the red wine last night for a short run... Struggled to do 5kms in 30 minutes but felt a world better for it. Particularly after a quick soak in the tub.
However, the late night endorphins rush did nothing for my sleep and I didn't get any.
Win some, lose some.
My plan is cut back drastically, not eliminate entirely. My health issue is more stress related but I'd been self-medicating via regular alcohol intake which is obviously not sustainable in the long term.

I find that strenuous exercise before work, plus a really good mattress = no more insomnia and when giving up (or cutting down on) a CNS depressant you use to relax, the insomnia is the worst part.

Man, you guys seem too young for all these alcohol issues. Granted, I'm going on very limited info here. Are (were?) you the type of drinkers who imbibe without question on a daily basis? In other words, several drinks a night after work to take the edge off or relax or whatever?
I have tied my share on, and have had my share of truly ugly moments, but it was always related to a social event - going out for a game, out to dinner, concert, etc. But I can also go 2-3 weeks (or more) without touching a drink and never think twice about it, depending on what's going on in my life. Just wondering if it's directly tied to stress (like Scots) or just a habit formed over the years or what - maybe even genetics. I had a roommate who drank daily for years, and we partied together occasionally, but at one point he just went over edge, lost his shit, and now is a recovering alcoholic. I always wondered where the point-of-no-return was/is.

I'm 40, so not thinking that is too young, especially as I have been a heavy drinker for most of my adult life.(Borderline alcoholic quiet likely yeh. No DT's yet though.)
