It's been quite a while since I saw this, and it still looks and feels good. At least better than this "what's in the box" crap. Oh, and I don't believe they did it with 500$ budget, unless they had pirated copies of software like Sony Vegas Pro or Adobe Premiere ;)

I guess they didn't count assets they already had, like the camera, mics and software, and they didn't pay themselves.
It's pretty cool what a motivated person could do with a handheld camera and clever CG work.
And yeah, I agree this is better than what's in the box. You need a story and people to worry about to drive things.

they're a commercial-directing duo so they already had a proper editing suite. the $500 went to costumes etc.

Awesome, they nailed the atmosphere.
Probably like this one as well, not sure if it's supposed to be Half-Life but looks enough like it it's pretty cool.
edit, shame on me, yes that is definately supposed to be Half-Life never finished the video.

I know I'm the naysayer on this but come on guys its junk. The only good bit is the very beginning before they start shooting the "characters". The integration of the HL2 stuff and the effects are pretty good. Acting is aaaaawful, camera is terrible. Amateur? Too right.
And why do you think that the Whats in the Box video is meant to be Half-Life Frangony? Seems like just an assets rip.

Lots of Half-Life elements, ok inspired by Half-life, the sounds of striders, hazard suit beeeeeeeeeeeep, voices of the covenant, obviously meant to be the Half-Life universe at least. These guys make more things like this, they also did a myth-buster spoof for example.
