Also it looks like I was right after all these years. Tori Amos finally snapped.
Dude. You could've deduced that from watching just about any of her videos from the last 17 years.

A much more ladylike option than her (
http://www.yessaid.com/pic/pele29b.jpg) previous choice I must say.
Anyway; There were a couple of guys who did this back at school (mostly just one guy), fully green screen sci-fi extravaganza with space battles and planets and semi motion control matching and oy gevalt. Extraordinary effort. Nice CG (for the time). Truly amazing. No one could wait to see it.
Sucked very hard in the end. Incoherent self indulgent nonsense. Looked nice though. It's no accident that
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow started out as a one man project.
I guess I'm saying, there's a lot of it about if you look. And many are very capable people with a great eye and imagination, but you never know where they'll go.
The thing about these two is they are the first game related efforts in the 'home brew sci-fi film' category that are half decent. And that's cool and a little surprising as well, since you think all these CG nerds would be right into games (and they usually are. Many probably want to be original and/or are worried about copyright). But to date not very many watchable efforts.
That's all gonna change now though. Make a high gloss sci-fi with tons of effort and you're probably going to struggle for hits outside of short film and CG nerds. Make a Half-Life-ish film on the other hand... yee haaa.
edit: thanks for the links Judith.

Impressive low budget post-production work and HL2ness aside I don't think there is much to this at all. IMO it falls down in pretty much every other category. Sure it's low budget but I didn't get a feel for a natural film making talent lurking underneath it. Seems to me that if they were given a big budget right now they would just make some dull sci-fi film with inert action sequences.
That's is not to say they can't improve of course and I'll still check out subsequent episodes.

Machinima are done entirely in game engine.
Yes I know that. I was loosely applying it to it since its game related. Call it fan film if you prefer.

The definition of Machinima is fairly strict. Using assets from a game within a live action film != animated/scripted within a game engine.
