Of course the plots were hard to follow. There were several times when I was left asking myself "What the Fuck was the point of all that?"
OK, fine, it wasn't hard to follow. It was painful to follow.

I'll be playing through the campaign this weekend, not expecting much as I've said before.
Although I will facepalm hard if there's a plot twist where the mute protagonist turns out to be a young Master Chief or some shit.

Considering that they have different names, and that Master Chief is a SPARTAN-II while in Reach you play a SPARTAN-III.... clearly, yes, they're the same person. Very astute of you.

I have to admit. I read the Fall of Reach a few years ago. and I think Bungie is taking the George Lucas approach and just making crap up as they go, ignoring plot canon, or ... as stated previously, they just don't pay attention to it and get more talented people to write it anyway.

Oh please, you're old enough to realise that sci fi "Expanded Universe" fiction is generally not set in concrete by any means and should be taken with a grain of salt. It can be superseded by fresh primary source material at a drop of a hat (i.e a new game in the series, in this particular case).

So I hear if you liked Combat Evolved you'll like Reech, confirm/deny

When it comes to halo the expanded universe has pretty much been included in the universe, both odst and reach touches heavily on the "expanded universe".
Prior to that they've been very good at avoiding the expanded universe though. Not denying it, but avoiding it.
but heck, it's their last halo game, why not give people what they wanted, a halo game set in the expanded universe.

There are a couple of books written when only Halo was around that were completely invalidated by Halo 2. Bungie has definitely taken the position of not catering to fit as much of the expanded universe into their games as possible. So I don't see a silly twist like OMG UR RLY MASTR CHEF being impossible just because a book says so.

Wasn't Halo 3 supposed to have been their last Halo game?

Their last masterchief halo game.
Both reach and odst were most likely a part of the deal that has given bungie their freedom.
