UPDATE: Upgrading to v1.19 of Thief fixed the bug (e.g. go to original Thief2, apply 1.19, load save from 1.18,
waltz past the pit of the screaming souls.(And, bonus, I get to play the other Halloween mission(s) that require v1.19).

You know where is the Water Tower?
Near it, there is a door protected by gates. And some black rumbles near it.
If you don't know what I mean, it's in the part of quarter near Alienors' Stronghold.
Seek there! The key is on the floor near the black rumbles, it's green
