you know, after playing doom3 where every time you collect a fucking ammo clip a wall opens up and an imp instantly jumps out at you giving you no time to dodge, fuck checkpoints and autosaves, quicksave is the only way to play this game without wanting to punch carmack in the face.
but then again, it's probably not the save system here that is at fault...
EDIT: personally, I detest games with limited savings (Hitman, Flashpoint etc.). Why? Because I hate, hate HATE redoing shit. Go through a whole level of hitman only to fuck up at the last second? DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN! Which wouldn't be too bad if the game was dynamic/procedural. But it's not. It's a puzzle. Which means you literally end up redoing the same _exact_ thing each time. Go left, hide in shadow for 30 seconds, sneak behind the post man, put on clothes, wait 2 minutes for guard to pass etc. etc. etc. Every single fucking time. It's not "fun" its tedious as shit. Just let me quicksave whenever and start off later; as I said, it's NOT like each replay is a different experience; it's the exact same 20 minute slog I need to get through just to experience the 2 minutes of "new" gameplay before fucking up again and having to redo it again. And no, I'm sorry, but unlike taffers, I dont get a hard on from sitting 30 minutes in a shadow somewhere memorizing some walking patterns of a bunch of nonexistant pixels.
With that, I rarely reply whole games; there's only few I played more than once (Bloodlines, Aracnum, Dethtoll and Koki Underwear Bonanza etc.) but that's because each replay offers unique and different experiences (play as a techie once, a mage another etc.) And even then, I usually give it a few months before doing a reply. I could not, for example, stand replying linear corridor shooters, because I know I'm just doing the exact shit over again. At least, not until enough time has passed (months/years) where I forgot most of the experience.
EDIT2: I noticed this post is pretty angry and sweary. I blame it on my 3 day sickness, general frustration with north ireland, all my friends leaving for summer, the indian embassy (or lack thereoff) and playing doom3.

As much of a trainwreck as Invisible War was, the one thing they got right was the save system. I could generally immerse my self in the world and if I died, I would just restart on that level. Contrast this to the first DX, where if I forgot to save and I died, I was screwed. I remember having to replay an hour of game just to get back to where I was.

The last two Halo games (ODST and Reach) brought back Halo 1's system of having a health meter, finite health packs + recharging shield. But then neither of those were sequels to Halo 3, so who knows what they'll do for Halo 4.

Regenerating ammo.

Chronologically they weren't sequels, but technically they were.
They always developed the games in the way they wanted to take them, in terms of reach they really wanted the healthsystem back and since odst and reach were developed after halo3, they took what they learned and built on it.
halo 4 is in new hands now though so who knows where they'll take it.

...lol...and perhaps, degenerating morale.
Seriously though, I can`t really think of a better (single -player) FPS than original Halo. This from a Quake addict, who contemplated an orbital strike on Redmond after Bill stole it from PC for his doggone Xbox.
But then Edge gave it 10/10 (when their scores still meant something) and I paid attention. Finally got it and yes, the combat has evolved (thought Bungie allegedly hated that phrase). Incredibly, the pad worked, graphics were outta this world and AI was finally truly alive. I remember spending hours replaying single checkpoints...just to get that one grenade or rifle that would get me through...hell, I want to play it now :)
All that assuming that you played on LEGENDARY of course...pointless otherwise.
So ok, maybe Half Life 2 comes close, or Stalker - but for other reasons. In terms of pure combat it`s still king for me.
2nd and 3rd were okayish... but with lame story and generally multiplayer oriented. Have not much hopes for the 4th though...

You guys have it backwards.
I want at least SOME games to play the way I want them to play, the old fashioned way that requires smarter strategies than just popping up and down behind cover. I couldn't give a shit less if everyone wants to just play Modern Warfare from now until eternity.

Yeah, ODST and Reach were definitely iterative advancements of the Halo series, from the gameplay design and implementation stand-point.
BUT Halo 4's developer, 343 Industries, might try to make it canonically follow Halo 3, where the Master Chief's upgraded Spartan armoured suit only needed regen shields. In the story you should have the very same armour as H3. But then again you watch the H4 teaser and they've pulled jumpjets out of nowhere, so they might not be putting that much thought into canonical consistency.
I personally would prefer if the game benefited from Reach's iteratively better gameplay, rather than talking a few steps backward for the sake of consistency. Eg with HL2 Ep.2, the HEV suit's torch no longer used the same power supply as sprinting and underwater O2 supply. This was never explained in the story, it's purely a canonical concession in favour for a better gameplay experience.
