Hammer Haunts.... - by DreadLord

Let´s discuss the story background of hammer haunts....
I wonder what "type" of undead they are.....
It´s clear that they arent related to normal zombies as there are too many differences....
The most interesting aspect of Hammer Haunts is that they can be killed like normal lifeforms....what could that mean?
1. They are the same type of undead like normal zombies..the ONLY reason why they can be killed like normal lifeforms is that there are only bones which cen be crushed easily with the sword (They can even be killed with Broadheadarrows (about 12 arrows)....this would fit to this theory as you can also crush bones with well-placed shots....
They reason why you cant do that with normal zombies is that they have still flesh on their bones so cant be "crushed"...
2. They are a completly different type of "supernational lifeform"...the skeletal corpse is controlled by an invisible demon from the maw....invisible but as vulnerable as normal lifeforms because there is "flesh"....thats why you can kill them with "normal" waepons.....
But there quite a few flaws in this theories....why Haunts dont get mutilated when killed/turn to dust?
I also came to the idea that are related to LotR´s Ringwraiths....created in the same way...eternal life but "streched like a robberband"...they gave away their flesh for eternal life....
And last but not least. The quote "Flames around me nothing but flames burning your flesh"...maybe a hint how they have been created......
There is also a quote in DS: "Hammerite Zombies appear when there graves have been.."....another hint? Does Hammerite Zombie mean Hammerite Haunt??

I forgot to mention that IMO the Haunts of Deadly-Shadows have no real Skulls....it seems to be that there is still flesh on their bones (maybe burned flesh)
ór is it just my imagination?

I've thought about this before. I get the impression that they are more like revenants out for revenge on the living for disturbing their rest.

But it is strange that there so many Hammerites out for revenge....it would be okay when they fight zombies (revenge for disturbing their rest) but they dont attack them...
Does someone think that the Trickster has something to do with Haunts?

I think he might, but I hate the idea. I would rather the idea that they are a sort of holy undead type, but evidence points to the contrary. Otherwise why would they attack Hammers?

Their voices are tormented/demented, so I don't think any kind of "holy" undeadness (huh?:weird:) is involved.
I believe they are Hammers whose graves have been desacrated, and thus they can't rest in peace.

That is exactly what they are. The current question more pertained to who disturbed them, and to what end.

(I'll have to find some references to Deity condoned undead, and get back to this topic). There have been instances in fiction of undead being in that state for sanctified reasons before. Unfortunately, I don't think that to be the case here.

What do you mean exactly?
...
Well I "created" a different idea before....
Hammerite Haunts are men which have been brought into the chaos dimension by the Trickster......
There the chaotic energies destroyed there bodies ("Flames around me...") but because of the strange properties of this dimesnion they didnt died....
After that they returned to our world ("to hell and back again") ...all in all they aren´t Undead in the traditional sense but a twisted version of a normal lifeform.....they have all the same properties like normal men (they can be killed etc..) except there appearance and their mind which hac become "evil"....

That is: "Hammer Haunts are undead Hammerites whose burial site was desecrated."

I'd opt for something in this line of thought. Whereas zombies are just reanimated corpses without the capcity for consious thought, Haunts are corpses possesed by an evil spirit/demon (notice the way they scream when killed in TDS). As for why they can be killed with mundane weapons why not suppose that severe physical trauma to the host corpse causes the demon to lose control of it (breaking the vessal containing it?).
