Hammer Haunts.... - by DreadLord

I'm also with the 'Demon' line of thought, but with one major difference: I don't think that the 'Demon' is anything from outside, I think it is the person who died, their personality and desires become so twisted that they would be almost unrecognisable, constantly driven (kind of like obsessive compulsive only really hyped up) to do things, such as patrol and fight. Given the mess in RTC it seems that those haunts have done nothing but patrol for 50 years. Speaking of RTC, didn't brother Murus want you to kill all the hammer haunts to 'free' them?
They seem to retain their knowledge of how to fight and their skills, I think they know everything they knew in life. They actually remind me a bit of the reavers from Firefly/Serenity (though less mad and more driven)
Also, thier bodies don't seem to be just bones (their clothing does not seem to be just draped over bones, there's definately something there). I think it's probably parched or charred flesh (remember 'flames around you'). Tieing in the Hammerite Zombies thing, perhaps they start out looking more like zombies, only more intelligent and agile. as the go on their flesh becomes strained, parched, charred, whatever.
Um, does that make sense?

I agree with the desacrated grave theory. Look at the missions with the haunts: THC- the cathastrophie was something of onholy orgin so the Hammers that die there didn' t get the proper burial and they have been filled with necromantic energies. RTHC - same drill. Eavesdropping - The hammerite graves have been desacated by the Mechanists taking over the Cathidral. I dont know about DS cuz I havent played it yet.
I have my own addition to the theory: The Haunts might be betaiers of the hammer order after death... In the Intro to THC it was said that during the Old Quarter Catastophie some of doubted the Builders plan and lifted up the "unholy" Swords. These Hammerites dies their souls where tormented and thier bodys rose as Hammer Haunts. That would explain the fact that the haunts in RTHC and tHC fight with swords instead of hammers(Eavesdropping). This means that the types of haunts in the two missions where different.
Oh and IMO haunts take normal damege because Expert mode would be too hard if you had to waste Ammo for the haunts in RTHC.
SPOILERSPOILERSPOILER:// You need to kill 9 to complete the Murus objectives.

Actually, Murus said: "Now I must ask thee for one last thing - these Haunts who inhabit the bodies of my brethren, they must all be killed."

Actually I never heard this line....hmmm I think I killed all of them too soon....
Maybe another hint? It sounds as if hounds ARE demons instead of a twisted souls......does somebody know the Barrow-wights from LotR? There are some similiarities.....

it´s very interesting to re-listen to those sound files of the haunts - they are located at snd.crf\haunts....
especially the HH1A0MO1-3 files and HH1A0MH1-3
..they say something which sounds very important for this discussion but its so hard to understand....
Can someone write those lines down?

The whole theory about being possessed by some demon from the maw of chaos is rather silly. The maw isn't some supernatural demon world. All of the creatures there are beasts, not demons. The whole idea of undeath goes completely against nature.
The Trickster wants to return the world to more of a natural place, where people once again feared the wrath of nature instead of safely protected inside their electricly powered cities. Not cover the world in complete darkness and create demons and undead :p
Most likely, haunts are simply souls trapped within their former bodies due to some unnatural cause of death. (The eye) Or simply as vengeful spirits due to the disturbing of their burial sites (Eavesdropping/Bonehoard)
When Murus speaks of freeing his brethren, I'm pretty sure he wants you to destroy their mortal bodies thus setting their spirits free. Most spirit banishings done today are centered around freeing the dead and showing them "the light" or the path to the afterlife.
Hope this helps.

Well it pretty much sounded as if Haunts are NOT the souls of his brethren...
Still can someone listen to those soundfiles and write it down? Would be helpful....

That is exactly what they are. The current question more pertained to who disturbed them, and to what end.
The Haunts were created to protect The Eye. Possibly by The Eye itself. Due to the nature of The Eye, it's guardians were obviously tormented.
EDIT ~ That of course was Dark Project. Any future Haunts were cameos at best. Sorry. :)
