After going to IMDb to read more about Michael Mann after reading (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122110) Dirty_Brute's post, I stumbled across one of his other films, (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085780/) The Keep (1983). I vaguely remember renting and watching it back in the day, but the only scene I remember is the grisly opening scene where they send a poor soul inside tethered to a rope, and when they pull the rope back out the upper half of his body is gone. :eww:
I was shocked to see big names in the cast (whom I didn't know or who weren't well known back in '83), as I had thought at the time it was a B movie: Ian McKellen, Scott Glenn, Gabriel Byrne, Alberta Watson, Jürgen Prochnow... Then I watched the (
http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi9371929/) original trailer, and was shocked again by the hammer icons that adorn the keep itself:

Interesting, and it does make one wonder. Who knows really.
I'll have to watch that movie when given the chance. Thanks for the stills images, good to see those.

At 1:18 there's something that looks like a glyph :weird:

Maybe it's just because this was mentioned, but... did anyone else think the music near the beginning sounded like the Horn of Quintis? In fact, a lot of the sounds reminded me of Down in the Bonehoard...
And the hammers freaked me out a little :laff:

If I had to take a guess where the hammer symbolic in Thief comes from, it would be norse mythology.
builder -> hammers -> Thor
Trickster -> Loki
There's also references to Garrett -> Odin - notice the hangman stained glass motif at Constantine's, also Garrett losing an eye etc.
It is possible though that the movie did provide some inspiration - the soundtrack for example is by Tangerine Dream, which as many have noted Eric's music is sometimes similar to.

That is really cool. It almost looks like we're looking at screenshots from an unannounced Thief film to be released.... if only.

Ummm...
No, I don't see it. It's stretching, in the extreme.
