Hey everyone! The recent 1.19 news got my interest in Thief back up. I've had it running under VMWare Fusion 4.blah on my Mac for quite a while and it works great except for one problem. The gamma adjustment slider doesn't do anything. That makes a large number of fan missions unplayably dark.
So I spent today writing a snazzy new Mac gamma adjustment tool. It's a simple app with just a menu bar item. <del>You can fetch it here from my DropBox account.</del> Playing with this utility and using 1.19 with 32 bit color support makes it much easier to adjust the display to a usable setting.
Eventually I'll add the About box and support dynamic monitor changes. When those happen I'll being putting it in the App Store but until then you can grab this free version. The App is signed and sandboxed.
Here's what the interface looks like:

I hope this helps you play under VMWare! If you have any problems, please post them here. I'd like to hear if Parallels or Wine users have the same problems and if this helps them as well.

Update: Handy Gamma now lives in the (

Thank you (btw: pre 1.19, Wineskin Winery ran Thief and also has a built-in gamma adjustment). Also, it is limited to 10.7+, could you remove this limitation?

I used to play thief on linux with wine but from some version on thief support on wine was broken. ATM i'm using Windows XP on an Old PC, but I'd also like to play it on my mac.
What would you recommend for playing thief on mac? Wine? Crossover? VMWare? Something else?

Thanks for the feedback! I posted an updated version (1.0.1):
* Corrected the gamma function. You are unlikely to notice the change though.
* Changed deployment target to 10.6
The (
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/54664744/Handy%20Gamma.zip) download link should be the same. Dropping the deployment target to 10.5 would involve dropping ARC which I don't want to do.
Let me know if it works on 10.6 or 10.7 as I only have access to 10.8 systems right now.
Tip: If you add or remove monitors, you can select "Reset to defaults" to force Handy Gamma to rescan the monitor setup. This will be automatic eventually.

I use Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, VMWare 4.x, and the gog.com editions. That works pretty well though I strongly suggest getting the 1.19 patch as that adds support for alternate screen resolutions and ratios which you really need with a VM setup. You also need to install the latest DirectX as the 1.19 patch uses it but doesn't really have an installer to insure it gets installed.
I also strongly suggest that when you run the gog.com installers you do NOT accept the default install location (Program Files (x86)) as that will impose extra security features making it very hard to run fan missions. Install them in something like C:\Thief.
I suspect Parallels would work just as well and possibly better as Parallels seems to generally beat VMWare at performance.
It's probably worth mentioning I play on two different machines. Both are older Core i7 machines with 8G RAM and I have no real performance problems.

Thanks, works on 10.6. Didn't test Thief though.
