Hi
I bought Thief Gold about 9 days ago and have been playing on the Medium and Easy difficulty.
right now im at the level called the sword
and up until now I've been playing quite badly
I had to kill a few guards and had a few badly hidden unconcious bodies Discovered.
Thief is the first type of game Ive ever played where you dont go around killing stuff.
and I cant believe that I missed out on it up until now
anyway can anybody give me some help with this level im finding it a bit hard even at lower difficulties?

Honestly I just recently tried it on the hardest difficulty. My advice to you would be not to play it at expert until you've gone through it once. The guards are supersensitive to your movements on all the difficulties, and without the ability to kill them, it can be a real pain. The level can be tricky in general.

the main reason I wanna try this level in the Expert difficulty is because theres no minimum ammount of loot that I have to get
Im pretty bad at finding loot
and as for the guards I think im up to the challenge of avoiding killing them
I avoided killing all the guards in the bafford level (I knocked out more then half of em)
and the only reason I started killing guards is because I got my self into these situations
in the thief guild level I ran up to guards and knocked them out without em noticing my footsteps
and the noisemaker arrow was useless cause they ignored it
I think Ill try it anyway
all I need is a few tips so that itll be a bit easier

I don't think there's any 'one' good tip that anyone can give to make it easier. Its a hard level even after playing 10 - 12 times.
The guards are a pain. The layout is a bit nightmarish and easy to get turned around in, and the lighting is funky.
However, it *CAN* be done.
My best advice would be to save save save! Save every minute or two, save before trying anything that might even be remotely dangerous. Just make sure you are in a safe, dark spot when doing it. (no saving as you plunge from great heights.. .)
For the guards themselves, use your moss arrows, douse the torches and stick to the shadows as much as possible. Standard advice, yes, I know. :P But they are sensitive, and sometimes you have to try getting past some of them several times before you actually make it.
And in some cases. ..luring them off then circling around while they look for you can help too. But this also sometimes takes several tries.

As stated, familiarity with the layout is key. The place is intended to be confusing, at first. Watching the guards from a distance and studying their patrol routes will be a big help. When ghosting,
timing is your biggest ally, and proper timing will enable you to do almost everything in the game, without using up your equipment.
For general hints check (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/tactics/) here and (
http://thief-thedarksite.8m.com/barracks/index.html) here.
Sword-specific:
* While inside the mansion, take note of the way the lightgem diminishes when Garrett is standing in the centre of a doorframe - this is useful for observing patrol routes, and pickpocketing keys; the guards will brush right past you and not blink an eye, if you're standing in the right spot. Use your lean keys to scope out your next destination, or to put out torches.
* Make the most of carpet in tiled areas. You can run and jump on it without alerting the guards. Save moss arrows for more difficult areas (i.e. top floor - some water arrows are a big help there, too.)
* In the garden, slip into the waterways to move between sections and remain undetected.
* If you find yourself in a certain secret area (Thief Gold only; you'll know it when you see it) conserve rope arrows and pick them up after use.
If you need help with a specific area, I'm sure someone will oblige.
BTW, this post will probably get moved to the "I & II Hints and Spoilers" forum.

odd
the level was easier then I thought it would be
I was trying to come in through the front gate
but after I discovered that its possible to climb with a rope arrow through the balcony it became MUCH easier.
I guess I shouldnt have asked for help
cause I passed the level at the expert difficulty with no problem after I found out that theres an alternate entrance thats not as heavily guarded
thanks anyway

Hey, whatever works for you, Bub; well done. :thumb:
All the advice given will hold you in good stead, for future runthroughs and other parts of the game.
If you ever feel like a
real test, try (
http://home.online.no/~ajnilsen/hn/hn.htm) Norwegian Thief with the (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/patches/) Ultimate Difficulty mod. Big-hairy-kahunas required.

Thanks
the Ultimate Difficulty thing is very tempting
I'd love to download and try it
but the norwagian thief thing is too tedious cause I dont want to search entire maps for items just to get 100% of everything
thats not my thing I've finished San Andreas with a 40%~ and I didnt care enough to go back just to get all the secrets
after Ill beat the game I will try the ultimate difficulty patch
Its nice to know that someone enhanced the AI in the game cause the guards tend to do stupid things like ignore noise arrows.
I also exploited Halo's AI even though the covenant elites are pretty smart
