I have searched the forum and I can not find any instructions on how to get thief to run in hardware accelerated mode rather than with "direct draw hal", which I guess is software mode, with Cedega under Linux.
Has anyone got it working and if so, how did you do so?

Hehe, you're wrong.
HAL stands for "Hardware Abstraction Layer", and its the interface provided by DirectDraw to the application, so that it can use your video card hardware in a standard way.
