I'm curious to know how many people play Thief in hardware mode. So how do you play Thief (Thief 1, Gold or 2)?? Also, if possible, it would be nice to know what software you use...

With DDfix and the widescreen patch I have no reason to run Thief in software mode - but that may change when i get my 4870X2...

OK. I'll bite...I'll ask the obvious (dumb) question. :cheeky:
What does that mean? What's the difference?

Hardware mode gives you the "3d" rendering. Software mode everything looks blocky and pixelly, like Might and Magic VI: The Mandate Of Heaven. :ebil: A wonderful game. And yes all, sometimes I *do* play in software mode, just to get a nostalgic feeling for days past. It usually lasts about a minute until I change it back though. :p

So how do you change between the modes?

While you are playing Thief I or II, you can change modes in the video options. Seriously though, the only reason they gave the option was because at the time Thief I was released, 3d acceleration was a new frontier you see. They were nice enough to give this option for those who did not have a 3d card. Its interesting looking back. I had a 4 megabyte Triton agp card at that time. Agp was also new around that time. Now, most video cards have hundreds of megabytes of video memory.

For a while I've been playing Thief Gold in software mode too. Mostly because I couldn't get hardware mode to work, and I didn't know about the fixed .exe at The Circle. Now, looking at it... I think I'd rather go back to software mode. All the shadows are extremely dark making things difficult to see, which in a game like Thief, makes a lot of sense. I find it adds a lot more atmosphere and believability.
