Now, most video cards have hundreds of megabytes of video memory.
Try gigabytes, my new card will have 2GB which is just nuts....

When I first played Thief, I had no 3d card yet, so I had to play it in software mode. In fact, I only bought my first Voodoo3 to be able to play Thief2...
...I don't miss software so much. I do, however, like Thief1's rendering style, which produces slightly stronger contrasts than Thief2's.

Hardware for me. First time I played Thief, I had like a ... 32mb video card or somewhere around there; my dad would use the company credit card to buy "replacement parts," only to find they didn't work and had somehow "violated the warranty," thus giving us the hardware. Course, he did work with a bunch of barren spinsters and diesel dykes. :laff:

Somebody normally played it in software in last 8 years? Quake in soft looked far better than Thief in soft. They offered soft mode in Thief for the few people who didn't have Voodoos and Rivas, but since 1998 3D accelerators were sharply more and more common in average gaming PCs.

Intel's proposed 'Larrabee' graphics system seems to consist of a bunch of Pentiums and software rendering.

I did 99% of the first T1 runthrough with software rendering, and way too fast gameplay as well. Installed DDfix later on and I could finally use hardware mode, it also slowed the game down to normal speed, I played through the Maw of Chaos that way and had a good time.

The poll should have been a little more specific. After reading the thread I figured out that it was referring to video rendering, and not audio.
I use hardware on video and audio. With the SoundBlaster X-Fi Fatal1ty Pro card I use ALchemy on my Vista PC. Video is an nVidia 9500.

Don't you mean software? :p

Thief in software has no nostalgia, since I got into PC games inn 1999, but on rare occasions I have switched to software since the grainy graphics seem oddly spooky. I even think I made a thread on this a few years ago.
