I've got my monitor on a table and I turned off the lights and put a candle in the corner to play Sisterhood of Azura Part 2. It's nice. Adds to the mood, especially dimly lit areas. If you put the candle off to the side, but still in view while playing, it's like the game extends out into your room. Just make sure you have fire insurance and an extinguisher handy. I've nearly set fire to my foot. Cats that aren't used to flame can't be trusted around candles either. I had one once that walked along with the flame licking her undersides. She just had never encountered real flame before and had no idea it would hurt her.

I've never mentioned this because no one would believe me BUT:
When I wrote all the walkthroughs for the Keeperchapel at ttlg, I did them all by candlelight. I was very sick, and very broke at that time (long story) and was living with my in-laws waaaay out from civilization on their farm. Their house is built into the side of this huge hill (AWESOME house) and the wife and I were slumming temporarily in the downstairs level. The main level was upstairs and the bottom level backed into this hill. Huge picture windows on both levels faced out onto the property overlooking a wooded area and small pond.* The downstairs was separated into two sections, but the lights were on a single switch. Wifey went to bed early, which means the lights had to be out, so I resorted to playing/writing walkthroughs by candlelight. If I'd had any money at the time I would have done it right and kept a glass of red wine handy as well.
So to answer your question: Yes, but only by necessity. In retrospect, I think it's a large part of my initial romantic experience with Thief.
*The remote and isolated nature of the property made it so that while I played TDP during the day a few times, I actually had to stop playing Bonehoard and RTC when it got dark outside until the rest of the family got home. I was alone, it was creepy, and those levels scared the bejesus out of me the first time through. I'm too embarrassed to talk about the engineering level on SS2...

For extra romance, you should have died towards the end of your life's work, maybe leaving behind a nub of a candle in an old pewter candlestick. It would have become a treasured relic.

Damn, Fett, that makes my initial Thief experience shamefully weak. Shamefully weak. And to think that all I had was the game and a dim room (couldn't see the keyboard if the lights were off). Good thing the games had me hooked all by themselves, but I hope to experience the games fully, someday.

I play thief while listening to Barry White.

A better question would be: who has never played by candlelight...
I always enjoy finding the Mood for a better experience, and asI played Diablo II listening in the desert level only Sting's "Desert Rose" and "Mad about you"in a damn italian overwarmed summer, I most enjoy playing Thief by candlelight also if it's day, and most of all when it rains down as hell (as about two months ago, it was also cold and the days dark)
Also eating something during the play could bethemed...what about a loaf of bread, some cheese and an apple? awesome, I could tell You, and drawing something abut thief sometimes in such a mood isn't a bad idea even if you barely can see the pencil, maybe also having a smoke out of my pipe, or burning some incenses
thief is a wonderful game and such mood situations can make the experience better, but it's already the best also if played alone :thumb:

Thief, candles, red wine.
This thread is gold!

New monitor, sometimes candle light. My favorite is the torches lit, and their light dancing on my walls, awesome for me.

You have real torches ?
