Lived alone at the time. complete darkness. grado headphones. gin, tonic, smoke. things got pretty antisocial there for awhile, but it really got it's hooks into me. every level a completely different experience, yet anchored by the same solid gameplay. beating a level, sitting back for a second, watching the next cutscene, loading the next one up and diving in.
for T2, i spent so much time exploring Karras' fortress but not assembling the pieces required to complete the level. I had to remind myself to take control of the damn level and beat it, not just run around and admire it's size and atmosphere and battle the AI.
still think that game was the beginning of something, not the end of it.
(that last sentence was not written with any disrespect to the fan community. It was more of a demise-of-looking-glass, why-didn't-this-brilliant-game-influence-the-industry-more kinda thing.)

I tend to play Thief games while using aroma therapy. Either aroma sticks or an aroma lamp( with essential oils). And since the lamp has a tea candle in it, it counts as candlelight..... But that can't beat some of the ways people mention here!!!:thumb:

I nearly burnt my room down the other evening when trying this play-by-candlelight setup (normally I just go by the glow of my monitor). See I had to find the best elevation and position for the candle which happend to be the wooden bookshelf in the corner of the room opposite my computer. 'Course I wasn't thinking all to clearly and didn't notice the space between the two shelves was too close to safely accomdate a candle. Thankfully I didn't have a cold or anything that night and after a while I picked up a decidedly strange smell which turned out to be my bookshelf being slowly cooked by candlelight.

Damn friends... I have read this entire thread and I am green with envy... I still cant seem to get these games to run on my damned taffing 'puter... I keep thinking about how killer it was playing those games in the dark - nothing else can set an atmosphere like them!! damn - Im just glad I wasnt the only one!! (Thought I was wierd for a minute or two - now that theres more than just me, that makes it a trend! Huh....) Well - im still trying to gt the damn things to dance... until then, thanks for the Memories!!!

I have a specific smell that for some reason I associate with playing the Thief series. I know smell is the sense most closely associated with memory, but I can't remember what that smell is or what it's like until I smell it again. All I do know is that every time I do smell it, it instantly triggers fond memories.
