Meh, I'll wait for the Postal remake.

I'll get it just because it's funny how people react to it.

I have a hard time understanding why this game is even discussion worthy. I don't really see anything to be excited about or outraged by or anything. It's just another game where you mindlessly kill shit.

I remember being fascinated by Postal when it first came out, I read plenty about it. ... It's a very humorless affair in which you need to kill all the civilians and police in an area in order to proceed to the next.
I miss-read that as Portal and I was very confused for the time it took me to re-read it and spot my error. :joke:

The enjoyment derived from that is not on an intellectual level, it's not about "satire", it's simply about the release of getting to act out all your worst instincts without
actually hurting anyone.
I can't help but think that the fact Hatred is getting so much... well, hatred, from the gamer community is because it shows that cathartic violence we so love, but without an ounce of justification for it.
Dang right! I want to be the Big Damn Heroes when I kick in the door, kill everyone, and take their stuff!

There's a difference between 'I have no interest in getting this' and 'I have no interest in this'. I'm certainly not going to buy it, but I've no objection to talking about it. I'm guessing that's what twisty meant, too.
It also is a fantastic opportunity for him to mount the high horse and demonstrate that he's a good person because he hates something objectionable.

I don't want to go out on a limb or anything, but I'm guessing some people might see a rather HUGE difference between killing women/children/cops as opposed to zombies/ogres/aliens.

That's basically the point. There are plenty of games where you mindlessly kill shit on the flimsiest of justifications, but this one strips all that out and has you play as a mass-murderer. That has some people uncomfortable and calling for it to be banned, while others see it as harmless escapism regardless of subject matter. I can't tell if the creators are going for critical commentary on the medium or are being edgy for the sake of edginess, but I find the controversy and discussion it has sparked really interesting.
When Payday 2 first came out a friend convinced me to buy it, and I felt very strange playing through it for a few hours, but couldn't put my finger on what it was. It wasn't until afterwards that I realized the game is set in DC and you're killing DC police officers, while I happen to know several DC police officers in real life. As in any other shooter they're just depicted as faceless goons, but I connected them with real people. It made me think about the fact that I enjoy killing, even killing innocent people, when it's presented the right way in a virtual medium. Hatred isn't fundamentally different, you're playing as a bad guy killing innocent people, but with mass shootings being a real thing it strikes that particular nerve of 'too close to home' for a lot of people- and I like that it's made people ask themselves why *this* game is unacceptable while others are okay, even if the subject matter isn't radically different.

Or maybe they just want to make money and decided that scandal is the best way to get noticed in todays overcrowded indie game market. IMO it's pretty lame that it worked this much, though.
As for the game, I find it super creepy, but I don't really care about it otherwise.

If someone made a game like Dishonored or Deus Ex, with the exact same design principles and the same quality of content, but the character you played as was a cold-blooded killer whose objectives were killing civilians and terrorizing communities, would the game get the same reaction as Hatred is?
When I see the reaction this game is getting, I feel like it has a lot more to do with the game looking really shitty than it does with the subject matter making people feel uncomfortable. I highly suspect that if there were an obvious gameplay hook that people were interested in, the criticism of the subject matter would be getting a lot less traction.

High chaos dishonored pretty much fits the bill. Ever overrun the masquerade with plague rats? Fun fun fun...
