Subject matter aside, I can't help but like the look and style of it.

3/4 perspective is a neglected genre.
So the MO is fuck-the-world nihilism. Makes as much sense as most any other game's MO I guess.
IMO the only MO for killing that's really credible is the bare minimum you have to do for pure survival and self-defense. So like Half-Life 1. I could do others to an extent, but suspension of disbelief doesn't go as far.
Anyway, doesn't look that fun to me just because such pure nihilism never really spoke to me & I never really understood the deathwish thing, although I understand that some people feel it sometimes. I could understand a "fuck-the-world, I'm done with this" sentiment, but even then I'd rather just leave people alone than drag them down with me.
Aaanyway, I could be into a game *like* this with the same suburban environments and gameplay if it were like a 3/4 P version of SWAT, or like a drug or gang wars RPG in the vein of The Wire, etc. There's not that many games set in normal neighborhoods with normal people, but there's so much potential there. This isn't cashing in on that potential, to say the least.

True, I was recently trying to think of any recent SP FPS games set in real world every-day environments (non military, non sci-fi or fantasy) but I couldn't think of any. For third person we have the GTAs and Kane & Lynch and Max Payne, but for FPSes? I'm drawing a blank.

The high-school 'fuck-the-world' attitude is simply uninspired and flat. Everyone got through that phase and moved on, thank you :) Not that I don't like mindless entertainment, but there's a huge difference in shooting an AI which is more or less capable of defending themselves or running away, and shooting in the face 'realistic' helpless civilians cowering in fear or begging to be spared. If it doesn't serve any purpose beside 'for lulz', then yes, it's highly disturbing. I wouldn't want to ban such things, censorship is rarely good, but I don't see the point of making such game yet. I can't even imagine it's fun for developers to work on that.

The aforementioned PayDay games; GTA V PC/8th gen; R6 Vegas 1 & 2; Takedown: Red Sabre; Battlefield: Hardline; R6 Siege.

Tactical shooters aren't really what I was looking for, and Payday didn't have much of a singleplayer narrative to speak of, did it? GTA V is the only one that's the kinda thing I had in mind.

That Kids React video is HILARIOUS
Strafe does SO look like it has GOOD GAMEPLAY
I remember being fascinated by Postal when it first came out, I read plenty about it. I only got around to actually playing it last summer, when it was on sale on Steam, and I'd say it's pretty much the same exact thing as Hatred. It's a very humorless affair in which you need to kill all the civilians and police in an area in order to proceed to the next. Hatred holds little interest for me now, but a younger, angrier Henke probably would've been all over it. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Some people will defend GTA and Carmageddon as being satire, and while that's true I'm betting most people who have played those games have had sessions where they kill everyone and everything just for the fun of it. The enjoyment derived from that is not on an intellectual level, it's not about "satire", it's simply about the release of getting to act out all your worst instincts without
actually hurting anyone.
I can't help but think that the fact Hatred is getting so much... well, hatred, from the gamer community is because it shows that cathartic violence we so love, but without an ounce of justification for it.
I cannot agree more. The backlash the game is receiving is reminiscent of all that 90s zaniness with video game violence. I'm waiting for Jack Thompson to spring out at any moment. Gameplay wise it isn't anything we have not seen before. The shake up this game is causing is much needed, daring to go against the grain. If it is successful perhaps the AO rating would open up an untapped area for games, who knows. I also think it is interesting that Hatred's logo looks remarkably similar to Doom's.

It does expose a lot of hypocrisy about violence in video games. The thing that annoys me is that, according to some people, the thinnest veil of excuse ("you're killing the bad guys") apparently justifies EVERYTHING. In BioShock Infinite you shot, decapitate, electrocute, burn alive hundreds of people. You litereally break their necks, rip hearts out and saw heads off with a skyhook in very graphically gory ways. The first fight begins with Booker smashing a head of a guard into the device, completely mutilating his face.
But silly me, they're the "bad guys"! That justifies every part of this disgustingly violent, maniacal genocide!
Interestingly, a lot of people offended by Hatred openly admit slaughtering civilians for fun in games like GTA. Somehow, that's perfectly fine and nobody bats an eye.
Eh, just wait until VR becomes a thing. The outrage about violent games will be greater than ever before.

Yes, I find it difficult to feel all that bad about killing people who are actively hunting me down and attacking to kill me.

Also correct. That specific moment is also where BS: Infinite goes horribly, hilariously wrong. Before that, you can kinda-sorta take it seriously. Afterwards, it becomes a parade of repulsive morality, bad gameplay and that "ludonarrative dissonance" thing.
