How does Thief: The Metal Age compare to the more recent one? I've heard many say TMA is far superior but what are the concrete reasons for this?
I'm just a bit concerned that the graphics, but more importantly the AI will be far worse. I can live with subpar graphics if the game sucks me in enough.
Is the game a challenge? I find a lot of older games are ridiculously easy in comparison due to lacking AI.
Just some pros/cons would be great comparing the two. Some games ages well (Freespace 2 for one) and some don't.

This should be good.

EDIT: Haha, BA!
Just look at any of the threads on the first page of this forum about any of the games, as well as the speculation about Thief 4, and you'll find that it's not only highly subjective and personal, but there are common concerns. You'll also find that no matter how eloquent or how close to concrete an opinion gets, it never sways those of opposing views.
Another thread is started at least once a week or two, especially once an ongoing thread has lost its momentum about this general topic. Many threads attempt to focus on a more-specific area of discussion, but nearly all of the threads devolve into the same old arguments. Expect some extreme views, but look at the commonalities for what you seek. Many arguments have been rehashed ad nauseum and you have hundreds of threads you could look at. I won't add my opinion here, only because I've burned out on it.:p

haha jtr7. ;)
Nox, only you can judge for yourself. Play T2, and make up your own mind, then play some fan missions. Comparing T2's original game to the Fan missions, for example, is almost like comparing apples to oranges. The AI in SOME fan missions are completely and utterly different than from the original game. And yes harder.
Hey jtr7, remember one of the cosas's beta, and the AI, can you say god mode? :p I agree with jtr7, some of these discussions have been beat to death.

Take a look around buddy. Know where you are? :) Only the largest haven of Thief II fans this side of Dayport. *We* are the concrete reasons.
Seriously, this one should be easy. Apparently you've never even played Thief I or II. You owe it to yourself to get these games. The first thing you'll notice is that the games have a much more dark, realisticly ominous, almost sick sense to them. :ebil: Be wary though traveller, you must be prepared for some serious exploration. Unlike Deadly Shadows, you will spend a great deal more time in each Mission as their is about a 1000% more stuff packed into each one. And not just random stuff either, we're talking master type stuff. Because the Missions are so huge and sprawling, the overall element of "action" that was prevalent in Deadly takes a much more appropriate role. Because the games are only for the computer, each Mission is a one load go. You will be surprised at the size of these Missions, and will never be left feeling anything remotely close to "I wish it was longer". As far as the AI, it is the same or better.

Like ridiculously large boring garden areas, hallways and the rest of it. :p
Seriously, at least advice him to play TDP and TMA in the right order.

All Thief games are good, and together they make an interesting story.
Here is a short list of differences between TDP/TMA and TDS:
TDP/TMA - pros:
-Better interface design (menu, readables, etc)
-Better body awareness (leaning, perception of distance, etc)
-More freedom of movement (rope arrows, swimming)
-Bigger mission maps
TDP/TMA - cons:
-It´s sometimes hard to make it work on a modern PC
-Graphics are worse
-The head movement is good but it MAY cause motion sickness to SOME people
-AI is a bit simpler. They won´t notice important loot missing. But on the other hand they run a lot more.
-It´s mission to mission narrative. So no City to wander around between missions. (But some fans prefer it that way)

I would rather that, than the alternative. :p

In almost every other language than English there is a difference between verbs in singular and plural, that wouldn't be so ambiguos. :erg: If I was to give you an order, I would have written it behind the first sentence, so apologies. I just wanted to throw in why no one has said anything about that he wanted to play the games completely in reversed order. I mean, this way there is even less cohesion between the games.

Small levels with a lot of things in? Unfortunately there wasn't a lot of feedback when I asked about that the last time (and irrespective of TDS); and I'm still not sure which is better gameplay-wise, especially since the gameplay is focused on getting around guards in buildings. But that's off topic.
