-AI is a bit simpler. They won´t notice important loot missing.
Incorrect. Dark Project has this feature... Unfortunately, they chose not to implement except for a few spots.

Nox, you can find Thief Gold and TMA on eBay at a low enough price that it won't be a catastrophe if you don't like them. You can also see videos of gameplay on YouTube.
Just yesterday, I decided to buy TG and TMA again (I still have TDS) to catch up on the latest FM's. I admit that I too wondered if I would find that the graphics and AI of more recent games had raised my expectations beyond being able to enjoy TG and TMA anymore (what's that advice about never revisiting your childhood heroes?). Luckily, the videos on YouTube reassured me that I'd still like it just as much as before. I'm also psyched about playing the mods for Unreal Tournament and Doom3, and some of the other mods I found look promising too. It's not like I'll need to sleep for the next few months.
To the forum in general: I've been away from Thief since playing TDS a few years ago and am pleasantly surprised to see that there's still so much activity here. Considering the games' staying power, EIDOS should consider re-releasing TG and TMA with the same missions but updated graphics and AI. I'd bet they would sell like hotcakes (I'd upgrade my system in a heartbeat if necessary), and Thief 4 would be inevitable.

Actually it seems Thief 4 is becoming real. Eidos Montreal announced that after DEUS EX 3 they would release an Eidos game that begins with the letter T. Tomb Raider is under another developer so the options are really thin.
As for TDP vs TDP Gold I prefer Gold since the mission structure is better.
You have one mission for each of the talismans, witch feels more natural to the story than having 2 talismans for one mission. Mage Tower s cool for the weirdness and Song of the Caverns gives you a Phantom of the Opera feeling. But I admit that Thieves Guild is a confusing and boring map.

My advice is to ignore the anal debates engaged in here by us anal nitpicking fans with our heads stuffed too far up our own asses, and just go out and play both thief 1 and thief 2. TTLG is good for hardcore fans, but I would avoid spending too much time here untill you have had the chance to go out and honestly enjoy all thief games. All the thief games are great, and you don't want four years worth of arguments spoiling your fun.
EDIT: Not directing this at anyone in particular, btw ... :)
In the grand scheme of things, all three thief games have the same core gameplay, particularly in comparison to other stealth games, and if you like one you should like all of them. Personally I would say that T1 and T2 are still very playable today, and if you can stomach T2's graphics then I don't think T1's graphics will be much of a problem. There are problems running Dark engine games on XP, but there are also well known fixes which are easy to find.

I'm going to have to disagre with the cat.
WHAT!?!?!?! :grr:  :grr: You are wrong, wrong, wrong!! :p
Just kidding! ;) :cheeky:
I loved The Mage Towers & Song of the Caverns, so I vote for the Gold. Admittedly, T1 was tighter. But I wouldn't have wanted to miss out on those 2 missions. Remember also that I didn't discover FMs until 2005. After years of playing the same OMs over & over, anything new was welcomed!! :laff: But, srsly, The Mage Towers is one of my very favorite OMs from all the games.

I loved all three new Gold missions. I in fact am currently doing another (5th? 6th?) playthrough of the whole game and just finished Mage Towers, very cool mission. I'd say Thief Gold's graphics are almost on par with Thief 2, and the missions and story are far superior

But I admit that Thieves Guild is a confusing and boring map. It's more valuable as a part of Thief's development history than a mission itself.

On the design side, we've brought on a new designer part-time in the person of one Laura Baldwin. She's getting started on mission design, just as Mike is transiting from his multi-player prototype mission onto a single-player mission.

I actually think TDS has a worse AI. Sure, they can know when some candles are being doused or a guard turns up missing, but that's theoretically something very easy to program. The enemies are generally so easier to trick. When they become aware of you, avoiding the detection is a piece of cake. That one time, the guard was so close to the screen you'd think he was trying to kiss me, and still couldn't see me.
Not to mention that the whole game seemed buggy to me, especially when it comes to grabbing ledges.
Not a bad game, but Thief I and II are just way better.

It's no problem to give the AI in TDS better senses. I only haven't found their breath values yet. :D

If you were in 'wall hugging' mode at that time, the guard can't see you because of a bug that caused the light gem calculation to drop into negative values in moderate to dark shadows. I confirmed the bug with ex-developers. They became aware of it too late in development and weren't able to issue a patch. I fixed this issue in the last release of The Minimalist Project and also increased the AI awareness.
