My comment - Deus Ex, outstanding game though it is, is a serious rip of System Shock 2. The whole character progression is very similar, the hacking, the weapon classes, the use of certain weapons again certain enemies... You name it, really. Deus Ex is SS2 meets Half-Life with more cinematic production values. The main differences are that DE's source of atmosphere is based more on conspiracy and character interaction whereas SS2 is like "Oh no I'm on my own with only dark metal corridors and zombies for company". I love both games though!!

I'd only partly agree w/Great Overlord. Deus Ex borrowed a lot from SS2 in terms of interface and character progression. When I first bought Deus Ex I had only seen SS2 once, in a demo, for about 5 minutes over a year before, and it was the first thing to come to mind when I booted up Deus Ex and saw the interface. But the stories themselves and the gameplay is radically different, enough that I don't think you can call it a serious rip. DX just borrowed liberally.

I don't know, both were great games, but Warren Spector influenced both, so I wouldn't say it was a huge rip. Bout the ending, though: I thought the "nah" was hilarious, couldn't get any better answer than that to her long proposal/threat. Just my two cents.

The interface of Deus Ex is totally different from SS2. I like the interface in SS2 better cause it doesn't pause the game when you enter your inventory and you can see around you for bad guys when hacking.

I concur. The interface was far better in SS2. I hope that ISA decides to go more along that route. It wouldn't be a ripoff; it would be a welcome change. Things were so much easier to use and identify, too. And you knew exactly how much ammo you had without having to read that small readout to the side.

I personally think that Deus Ex is a much more ambitious game in its design than Shock2. It succeeds in giving the player a sense of freedom that not even Shock2 can match. I'm not bashing Shock2 though; it's my second favorite PC game after Deus Ex. Also Deus Ex has no character anywhere near as cool as Shodan. Both games are masterpieces.

Deus Ex is a more realistic game so the buttons and such surely cannot match the ones in SS2 which set in asci-fi fantasy realm. I mean, SS2's anti-grav elevators and colorful buttons are sure cool, but you expect to see one in New York or Paris? Same goes for the texture, and Unreal engine used by Deus Ex gave much more detail than SS2's Dark engine. Actually I found Deus Ex to be much brighter than SS2 generally, but maybe just my monitor setting...
The music, yup I love SS2's music a lot, and the sound effects are creepy in SS2, very scary. But then it has to do with the setting again. Deus Ex has a real-world conspiracy plot while SS2 has a sci-fi horror plot.
And Deus Ex has more human interaction and RPG elements, while in SS2 you seem can do more things about the objects, like hack the door and do the little puzzel, and all the psi-powers are great (really hoped Deus Ex got some psi-powers...)
The endings, I'd say both game got not so good endings. System Shock 2's ending is appropriate for a sci-fi horror game, but the endings to that kind of story are always bad IMHO <IMG SRC="boring.gif" border="0"> Deus Ex, on the other hand, got quite anti-climatic endings. the endings' quality are not on par with the gameplay :(
Overall these two games are both in my all-time top 3 game list (the other one being Planescape : Torment if anyone cares to know), so why argue? ;)

Er, Deus Ex's ending was one of its best qualaties. I really thought they fitted into the general atmosphere of the game. So what if you don't get a happy-pansy ending, it was diffrent.
As for the buttons, I agree with wossname. This may sound silly, but the buttons in Deus Ex (looking like a lego or something) really kicked me back to reality, whereas the buttons in SS2 really looked like a button. Sorry, this may sound weird to you, but its true.

Well, just to make things clear, I actually hate "happy-pansy endings", no, not really hate, but I think they are overdone. I like the concept of Deus Ex's endings, but I think the execution is a bit anti-climatic. Also they are just too short IMHO...
The best ending I like in all games is the one of Planescape : Torment, and Thief.
