Why do people buy laptops for gaming?
I don't know about other people, but for me I've usually lived in pedestrian cities, so I want a laptop to always go out with, meet friends at a cafe or wherever and pull it out to do stuff, read some articles, watch a show, play some games. I can't see always sitting at home doing stuff I can do anywhere, around a lot of people and stuff going on. It might be different if I were in a different kind of location though.

Anyway, welcome back.
Simple. There are games on the PC that I cant play on the PS3 - and sometimes when they cross over they are inevitably better on the PC (eg: Portal 2).
Plus I liked the look of the G73SW :erm:

Yeah, I'm jealous. That's not a bad commute at all, going Northwest instead of Southwest with all the traffic. I've been out to Manly a few times and it sure is nice. I prefer it to Bondi, though I have to admit there's more eye candy at Bondi.
Have you found any place in Sydney where you can get a pint of decent English style ale?
Seems the sky high beer taxes have prevented craft brewing from catching on.

Yep, I really dont like going across the Spit Bridge, always seems packed with people equally pissed of as I am.
Best place I've found is Harts Pub in The Rocks - they do a nice selection but to be honest since I moved here I've become a bit of a wino, but I'll still have a cold beer after a hard week and obviously Summer time at the Wharf Bar in the sun is amazing!
Where about's are you? We should meetup for a beer if you're in Sydney?

Ol, gunny has been toying with the idea of picking up and moving somewhere random. I have lived in various cities in Ohio for the vast majority of my life (Columbus, Cincy, Dayton, Toledo, Logan, Nelsonville) and could use a change.
I have family in Virginia, does anyone here have any opinions on life there? My relatives are glowing about it just to get me out here so I am not getting the bad with the good and I would prefer a 3rd party to offer up some help. Thanks!
fonz: the beach is GORGEOUS. Man, it must be nice to fall asleep with the sounds and smells of the ocean every night :thumb:

Where in Virginia, specifically? I lived in the Hampton Roads area (southeasten VA, right next to the NC border) for two years during school. It's not a bad place as far as weather is concerned. I'm a warm-weather guy, so it suits me well. It can get pretty cold in the winter due to a decent amount of humidity, and there's not often a lot of snow to justify it. This is especially true if you live right next to the ocean like I did most of the time. Winter winds can get pretty wicked there; not so bad if you're more inland, though.
But summers are awesome. Nice and warm without getting too extreme; 70s and 80s typically, sometimes with a nice breeze to tone it down a little. And even spring and fall are warm; it's not uncommon for temps then to still be in the mid 70s.
The beach does get pretty crowded in the summer though, as would be expected, and traffic is pretty bad on the two streets closest to the water. But it's still nice to have it there, and every year you get to see some pretty mind-blowing sand sculptures during the Neptune Festival. If you're lucky, you could even see a few beach weddings.
As far as the rest of the Hampton Roads area, it's pretty nice. Lots of shopping malls, a zoo, a botanical garden, (
http://www.sevenvenues.com/) the Scope, Chrysler Hall, some pretty sweet Mexican restaurants (ever eaten a burrito as big around as your fist?) and plenty of movie theaters. And two big interstates connecting everything; you just have to stay cautious as drivers can be a little nuts.
I can't really report on the crime rate as I didn't watch a lot of news up there, though some places seemed to be worse than others, just from hearsay.

Well done in upping sticks and going for it fonz. I hope it works out for you. Like I've said before - we thought of doing the same some years ago but I think the upheaval would have been too much. It sounds like a little bit too much of a mission now (for the time being) but things being what the are in the UK I suppose it's always an option.
I miss beaches though :(

@Enchanty: thanks for the lengthy write-up! Seriously. I appreciate when anyone takes the time to reply to something and puts more than a sentence into it. Thanks again.
That said, this would be around the Richmond metro area. I believe a suburb called Asheville?
Anyhoo, that's the general vicinity. Fun fact for all of you tech geeks...I would be working for my Uncle's firm 'Hanover Electronics'. This business has netted my aunt/uncle millions of bucks over the years, They actually had a HUGE part in bringing GPS to the civilian side. In 1995 Uncle Frank gave me a unit the size of an old 80's 'brick' cell phone like in Vice City. It was a dot matrix screen in LCD. Anyway, it was the prototype and it worked by triangulating 3 satellites and it would simply display a latitude/longitude (down to the min/sec) point. Wasn't terribly useful unless you had a map with you to utilize the data and turn it into an actual usable location.

No problem. :)
Unfortunately, the Hampton Roads area is the only section of VA I'm familiar with; I can't help you regarding Richmond. Sorry. :erg:

Definitely. I'm in Milson's Point. Nice flat in a super convenient location, but it's not the beach..
I'll be here through the end of May, but then I'm over to the UK for 6-7 weeks. I have a mostly flexible schedule over the next couple weeks, so send me a PM or email (dave at redmc dot net) if there's a day you want to meet. Otherwise, I'll get in touch again when I get back here in a couple months.
